I bought a refurbed 870 from an ebay user 3 days. I took the printer along with my camera to the largest flea market in S. Florida yesterday and today. Setup a mini glamour shots studio with my laptop, the printer and a cheap backdrop. I made $700 my first day off of roughly 35 walkup customers and $400 today. I put there faces on Magazine Covers along with custom phrase. This printer is awesome! Do they have one better than this already? I used to use a Dye-sub but it was slower and more expensive. I plan on ordering the CFS from MIS.

Sounds great. What type of camera were you using? Have you done this before? I would love to do that.

Please tell us how you got started.

What a bunch of suckers, wait until their pictures fade 2 weeks from now...I wouldn't frequent the same flea markets too often!!! Nonetheless, nice work man...great way to afford a new camera and other equipment!!!!

Hi Johnathan
Great job, I am proud of you. Specially part about cfs and MIS inks.

The man with fading prints must have an HP. The Epson 870 is a fantastic printer and getting a little hard to come by. Flea markets good way to promote your digital Photography. Buy some frames in bulk and you can charge even more. You can also overspray to protect picture and put in envelope or frame. The customers who are buying from you are not suckers. You could even dump file on a cd and charge a couple more bucks. The extra exposure in fleamarkets will give you spinoff business.
Good luck and happy printing. PS: keep an eye out for a 1270.

ACTUALLY, I have an 870 (never an HP)...and yes, the prints fade.
The Epson 870 is a
fantastic printer and getting a little hard to come by.
I've got one for sale if anyone is interested...state your price, I'll tell you if I'm interested. The printer is one year old almost exactly.

Overspraying...there you go, raise the man's working overhead so he doesn't profit as much...stick with the frames, your prints will last longer!!! Besides, overspraying has proven to not do much...if anything!!! Actually, your best bet is the MIS ink, and either some Iilford paper, or Kodak Ultima High Gloss...those papers alone will resist Ozone Fading more than anything alone.
. The customers who
are buying from you are not suckers.
Okay, I'll admit, "suckers" was a little brutal...how about "uninformed?" Instead of just handing people prints, inform them they should frame them (or like it was suggested here, sell them a frame) so that the prints will last.

Thanks for all the advice and replies.

Yes I have recently read the news on the fading. And Yes, I even notifiy the customer that the prints may fade. However, if the printout fades within 1 year I will replace them free. The customer looks at my sample photos and say "How much for One" I say $25 for two sheets with multiple posess.

And these people are not suckers. More to their credit, they realize a great bargain when they see one. Most people dont archive their glamour shots. They give them out to significant others, and so forth. I would call someone a sucker if they paid the real "Glamour Shots" the $250-$300 for a few photos to give away. The magic I create is not the photos. It's the treatment and the fantasy. Imagine putting your face on Time magazine. Or a close look-a-like.

I am buying some props from Backdropoutlets.com also. I want to do class photos and even some family stuff. Hopefully within a month or two I can afford a Fuji Pictrography to offer an upgrade in the longevity of the print. The samples I got from a local shop with one are not all that better from the 870. He paid $14k for his printer.

We are buying the cheap 8x10 buy the box from the $1 store today. I just won another 870 off of ebay for $85.00. I know i will need it as a backup, because of clogging.

Certainly, there are differences between what I do and what a real photographer does in a studio. Im just betting on the fact that most blue-collar class people cant afford to pay for those differences and will choose me instead. I am going to develop a CD with the Magazine cover templates for people to do what I do. I am working on making my booth look more prestigious. Than I will open two more booths in other spots in the state.

Jonathan, when your "subject line" said "See what I did" I expected a shot of your setup. Seems like a very interesting idea. But, don't get to thinking of me in terms of competition as I have the kind of hearing loss where I could never understand in those crowds; besides I live in Illinois!
Best wishes
Jane

I've seen another person doing this in a flea market using backdrops, studio lighting, an Olympus C3030, and an Olympus P400 printer. He seems to be doing fairly well.
