Thinking of moving on to the 5D from the 20D, and would like to know if the 5D focuses with LESS accuracy when used with a lens that is slower than f2.8.

As a comparison, it is a fact (claimed) that the 20D focuses (supposedly) with "up to three times" greater accuracy when used with a lens that is f2.8 or faster.

Appreciate you input. Thanks.

I had no frustration with the focus speed of my 5D with EF28-105 f3.5-4.5 or EF75-300 IS f4.5-5.6. I did not try 20D, therefore, can not make comparison, however, some magazines issued in Japan tested the focus accuracy and 5D result is better than 20D or D200 with f4 or slower lenses.

what 'bout the "three times greater accuracy" thing with lenses f2.8 and faster. that is the case with the 20D.

is it so with the 5D?

Yes. It's the same system with added features. I was a bit worried that the far left and right sensors would not be far enough out, but so far, I've found them to fall at very usable positions.

Also note that for, say, a 50mm FOV, you'd be using a 1.6x longer lens on the 5D. That should translate into a 1.6x higher accuracy, assuming the same f stop (which should translate to real gains assuming you are stopping down one f stop further on the 5D for the same DOF).

I haven't seen it yet. I saw a review of it on the tube, and it showed a scene where the Japanese director was giving detailed, sensible, artistic directions for what he wanted from the American actor in the whiskey commercial, and the interpreter was failing completely at expressing them to the American. Painfully funny. Reminds me of an American friend working at Deutche Bank here in Tokyo. The Japanese software engineers "communicated" with the engineers in the home office in Germany by fax in English; essentially no communication happened, and my friend wondered why the bank didn't simply collapse.

Hi David

What I'm about to say is painfully off-topic, but the movie has very little to do with linguistics or it being lost in translation. It seems to me funny how they have decided to so entitle the show.

Rather, it is about emptiness, friendship, chance and impossibilities. There was even a part in which Bryan Ferry's "More Than This" was poignantly karaoked to scarlett johansson by mr bob 'the murray' harris.

I would put it as one of the better motion pictures I've seen in the last half decade. The other being miss kidman's Dogville.

Do let me know if ever you should find out about the hotel.

My warmest regards

I just responded in another thread that when using the center AF point (focus and recompose) I can't really see any difference between the 5D and 1D mkII AF accuracy (or any appreciable speed difference). Certainly, I don't have any more OOF images with the 5D than I had with the 1D mkII.

I do a lot of work in dimly lit warehouses, so I held onto my 1D mkII in the expectation that in some low-light situations I would need its AF accuracy, but so far that has not been the case.

This may be more indicative of the conditions I shoot in, and my working habits than of the absolute focus capabilities of each camera. None the less I have been surprisingly pleased with the 5D's focus accuracy so far.

My guess is that the 20D's focusing algorythims (sp) have been tweaked/improved for use in the 5D.

The 5D's focusing system is the one from the 20D with additional
focus points added for servo focusing.

So it should be as good in single shot as the 20D and better in servo

It is not going to be as good as the 1 series obviously

Yes. I realize that the Tokyo setting and language misunderstanding jokes are secondary to the point of the film. It's on my list of films to see.
