Your thoughts on Tamron AF 28-300 mm F/3.5-6.3 XR DI LD zoom lens NIKON

i bought the very same lens with my d50 for a trip to panama. i'm very pleased with its performance in a variety of situations. i did my homework, so i knew not to expect perfection. its not the sharpest lens, or the fastest, or the most durable, but it is a good, light, compact, multi-purpose, easy to zoom, easy to m-focus, good looking lens. if i had had more money, i would have gotten something better. many images were too soft. the close focusing ability is its best feature, i think.

I bought this lens originally with my D70, and used it alot for about 7 months, before I bought the 70-200vr. Now that I am spoiled, I barely ever use the tamron. The Tamron is a good lens, not great. The macro, close-focusing ability is great.

Don't expect tooooooo much from this lens - since it is not really fast (f3.5-f6.3). It handles good light very well. If you are shooting on a sunny day - you will have no worries, and the range of 28-300 is great. If you have low light you really need a tripod to get sharp pictures.

Check out this gallery - Id say 90% were taken with the Tamron:

Actually one of my favorite pictures was taken with this lens:

I have been looking at the TAMRON AF 28 -300 mm lens. I currently
have a Sigma 70-300 DG Macro which I use. I am thinking of changing
lens to a more compact version. Is the Tamron better or worse
please advise and give me your valued comments.

I agree with "shutterbuggin"... I've been using the 18 - 200 with my D70s
and am completely satisfied. It is a "good light" lens, very sharp in those
conditions. The range is great and it is light and sturdy enough if you
are reasonably careful with your equipment.

If I could afford the Nikon lens I would certainly buy it but for the
money the Tamron 18 -200mm IF DI is very good.

FWIW (I have no proven credentials here!), I was talking to a friend about my plan to purchase a new lens (I plan on Nikon 70-300 D). This friend is frequently out of the country in the field with his equipment and I value his opinion. He mentioned this specific lens to me w/o me asking. He has had it for several years and it has been around the world. His father also just purchased this lens. I still plan on getting the Nikon D lens, but took note of his opinion.
