Rumor, but reality mill, from the CES, the next Oly DSLR

of course not real.

Just some fun stuff (have you seen the ;-) ?) but this thread has just been about pure speculation so I have thrown in some spicy specs...

because like you the wait has been too long. I personally know several photographers who did the same and I am on the verge of switching to Nikon. david

I don't expect anyone will be dissapointed. Not unless you are
expecting it to compose the photo for you and then clean your house.
Ummm shouldn't that be clean the house first and then take the photo? Other wise you will get pictures of a measy house (unless your house is named Dorian Gray).

However, I doubt though that the matrix metering will have colour
sensitive sensors so I the histogram will be for luminance only and
the external WB sensor will remain.
Yes, luminance histogramm only. The display is multicored to fit the rest of the viewfinder style which has multicolored display elements, too and if you like to see other data in that dot matrix display (costumable).

You can also have to turn the display from green to yellow/orange (underexposure) or blue (overexposure) or red (both, to high contrast)

I also forgot the HUD display which can show
  • lighting focus points (nothing spectacular but you will now see which part of the cross sensors are active)
  • grid lines (2x2 at the rules of thirs or 5x5)
  • instant shadow (yellow/ornage box) and highlight (blue box) warning over an (usually invisible) 30x40 grid segment system (each of them coupled with the 1200 points of matrix metering).
The Olympus C-8080 uses a similar "instant histogram" type, just read it in the review there.
On the E-3 its of course not shown in an EVF but on the HUD (only optional)
Well well,... just speculations as usual.
of course...

best regards

Any type of image stabilization that doesn't correct the light path before it reaches the mirror means that the viewer will not see exactly what she has framed be truly captured.... what she thought was the edge of the frame won't be....

Matters not if it is a servo moving the sensor, or an oversized CCD with a roaming image floating on it, any optical viewfinder (as you implied with the mirror up spec) will mislead. In most cases it will be just a fraction of a mm, but enough to not be called a true 100% view. For longer shutter speeds the movement will be more severe.

The art of true rumour-mongering is the art of propaganda.... it is very important to be sure the story is coherent in itself as the purpose of said writing/speaking is to divert the reader/listener down a path... that they will not be able to tell is not true. Truly, the power of propaganda comes from the reader's/listener's own desire to want to belive , and we see that in these threads all time. Furthermore, government propagandists all the time over step their boundries and cease to be really effective. However, there are some propagandists, not only in government but also in industry, that are really good and can get people to really march down a path to be willing to do (or buy) what is needed.

I think Olympus will announce a 5D/D2X competitor. The middle class segment will be catered later this year.

I think we can expect a camea that looks very similar to the E-1 and has very similar features, however it features:

12/10 mpx
9 fps
(new) 2,5 inch display
New and faster Autofocus system
New AF also allows for new metering options

To achieve all this a new mirror technology is used that allows for a brighter OF.
New battery type that allows some 1500 pics to be taken on a single accu.
Wheaterproof

Such a package can easily compete with Nikon and Canons offerings. But will be expensive though. Probably around 2995 Euro/Dollar per unit.

Furthermore we can expect Olympus to announce some gadgets to go with this, among all of them is a WIFI unit.
Thanks, I was unsure as to where they wanted to place the product.
Either with Canon's 5D or Nikon's D200. That clears things up.
Now, if it would only have in-camera AS...
Please note that was an opinion, not fact, based on my belief that
Olympus cannot compete head on with Nikon and Canon in the uber
camera arena as the long term viablity and superiority of
FourThirds is not yet proven. YMMV.

The 5D is a curiosity akin to the Detroit technique of putting the
big motor in the smaller, cheaper body. Other than the size of the
sensor size and pixel count, the D200 is a higher spec camera.

It is only a camera, and sadly if you are a tat photographer, your pics will still be naff even after buying it!

Who would invest such money on digital anyway? I mean fast moving technology, it will be defunct after 4 years...

I would buy a 35mm Leica before that expensive Oly! Lol! It will last a lot longer too!

I'm pumped up because the success or otherwise of the Ex decides whether 4/3rds is viable in the long term. Or so it seems to me. And I have a (literal) investment in it now...

Canon and Pentax are the only camera compenies that do incremental updates every 3 months. The E-1 > E-3 update is about the same abount of time as between Nikon's D100 and D200.

So if you want to purchase a new body DSLR body ever 6 months, Canon is your company. If you purchased into Oly thinking that they have a product cycle that will keep you on the bleeding edge, then you set yourself up for dissapointment. Oly dosn't do business that way. I prefer their strategy and knew what I was buying: a product and a company.

I know quite a few Nikon users who switched to Canon because they felt that Nikon took too long to introduce either the D2X or the D200. Everyone tends to look at Canon's business model and view it as the indusrty norm, but it really is atypical.

As much as I do agree that the replacement for the E-1 is overdue, I also recognize that Olympus doesn't have the ability to keep pace with Canon's product cycles. Hell, I don't believe that Canon is doing itself any favours with the speed of its product development.

That's very easy to say just after the D200 release. Do you realized how long that was in coming? I have seen folks ditching Nikon and moving to Canon 20Ds all through this past year. There are always going to be folks who jump around. Nothing wrong with that if they have the money and want to have the new new camera.

No,

the sensor view will be 100% identical if stabilisation starts when pressing the shutter.

The stabilsation will counteract any movement AFTER pressing the shutter, so the image will stay 100% excatly the same what you wanted to photograph in the moment you pressed the shutter.

After that you do not see any image in the viewfinder because it is dark with the mirror in upward position.

When the mirror is flipping down again the sensor has go back to the central position and the game starts again.

The results is perfect 100% wysiwyg view with a moving sensor.

LOL, we agree on two things. Well 3 if you include Tom Petty.

Of research and development, why dont we put a fake leak up on the board our most loyal customers read and write on. They will argue about it we can read whats most important to them and we can design our new super camera from there...BRILLiANT!!! they all yell...now lets go to lunch!
