Summary roadmap 2006 Pentax/Samsung

Hi All,

Interesting that many of the items are straight replacements for existing models

D/DS/DL (with possible sensor upgrade)

20-30 Limited lens - replacement for 31 Limited?
60-80 Limited lens - replacement for 77 Limited?

Are the existing limiteds being discontinued? Would be a shame considering that they're two of the best lenses around for any camera...

Mal..

Why not simply make a 100-300mm f4? I need to buy a 24mm-90mm F3.5-F4.5 or 28mm-105mm F3.2-4.5 to cover between 45-65/100 anyway.

:))

BTW, I have 16-45 and am expecting 50-200 f2.8, something like the Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 50-200mm F2.8-3.5.

  • Samsung DSLR like the istDL in march (with Cypress 9Mb sensor?,
Schneider lenses?)
Go Samsung!!
  • *istDS next model in the middle of the year
It will be interesting to see how much Pentax will update the DS.
  • *istD next model later in the year (Photokina)
Can't wait for that one.
  • MF model costing about 7500 euro
If one day I'll turn pro, this would be my choice of MF.
  • 60-250/F4 zoom-lens
F4?? What a dissapointment! On the other hand if the price is right and optical quality is there - it would make a nice travel lens.
  • Limited lens between 20-30mm
Hmm...
  • Limited lens between 60-80mm
Pentax already have 77mm limited in the line-up. Why would they make another limited lens in this range when their long telephoto range is non-existent? Why, Pentax, why wouln't you make a new 300/4?
  • possibly two other DSLR's for Samsung (maybe their version of D/DS)
Go Samsung!!

  • 60-250/F4 zoom-lens
So this high performance zoom lens Pentax had on their road map is
an f/4 lens?. My first reaction is a little disappointment, but
maybe this isn't so bad after all with high iso cameras.
I am quite dissapointed as well. This range and F4 would make it a nice travel lens, but this lens better be great at F4 or I don't see many people buying it over DA 50-200.

I saw the road map posted last year and those 2 lenses are supposed to be pancake lenses and not replacements for the heftier limited.

Holy scheizze,

Thank you Richard. They have an impressive catalogue which I downloaded for a later more thourough read. All I have to check for now is not to buy goodies of all sorts weighting more than 2kg as the shipping gets a whopping £25 then... hey, they have nice tripods and supports also...

regards,

Jonas
Try Speed Graphic, they list a whole range of goodies including B+W

  • 60-250/F4 zoom-lens
F4?? What a dissapointment! On the other hand if the price is right
and optical quality is there - it would make a nice travel lens.
I feel the same.

hmmm..., "a nice travel lens" regarding its size ?! It makes me think of the ads graphics on PENTAX website - a girl holding a PENTAX DSLR. Once again, PENTAX is taking care of women. :))
Why, Pentax, why wouln't you make a new 300/4?
I have the same question. Or, 100-300mm f4, rather than 60-250.

:))

I had a feeling the Pentax lens would be an f4. I could use a wider aperture a few times a year but would also like a compact lens. If the price is right, I will get it and a monopod to make up for the lost stop.

I saw a handy summary of Pentax/Samsung plans (most if it already
mentioned here) in a post of the TeKade german Pentax-dealer. Here
a translation:
Still not an official enough source, although likely to be as accurate as anything we've seen in this forum.
  • Samsung DSLR like the istDL in march (with Cypress 9Mb sensor?,
Schneider lenses?)
  • *istDS next model in the middle of the year
Personally, I'm not interested in either of these models if they are based upon the existing DS ergonomics and facilities.
  • *istD next model later in the year (Photokina)
Okay, I can wait, however it would be nice to know beforehand what we are waiting for!
  • MF model costing about 7500 euro
Way beyond my radar!
  • 60-250/F4 zoom-lens
As the glass will have to be quite large to allow f4 at 250mm, is there any reason why it couldn't be f2.8 at the short end? Also concerned at the wide zoom range as that suggests some compromises, 3x is usually accepted as the limit with reasonable performance.
  • Limited lens between 20-30mm
Nice if it is f2.0 or even faster, i.e. f1.4, like the Sigma, but way better. :-)), but I suspect it will be f2.8, like the 40mm pancake.
  • Limited lens between 60-80mm
Again f2.0 would be really nice, although f2.8 would be acceptable.
  • possibly two other DSLR's for Samsung (maybe their version of D/DS)
Ho-hum, I've never been impressed by badge engineering!

Now that I sit here discovering a lot of stuff I didn't know I needed - I realize I forgot to ask:

Can you recommend them? Ordering by e-mail - are they responsive (will they tell me anything about stock situations or delivery times - or will I just see the money leave my account)?

J

Well...to be honest a lens helf the weight provides almost as much speed advantage as an extra stop because it can be more easily hand-held and/or use lighter supports (tripods/monopods).

Primes are another issue. I use zooms for portability and primes for quality - dont see the point in a heavy zoom lens when primes are faster and lighter.

I spend most of my money on cameras and lenses, the rest I just waste...

Yea, but that extra stop can make a difference when you need it I guess I'll stick w/ Sigma. If I wanted mediocrity I would get the DA 50-200.

The DA 40 limited is not that bad of a price and certainly a lot less than the 31 limited. If the DA 20 something is similar in price, one could put together a nice small kit.

I can envision using the 2 shorter pancakes, Zenitar 16 and the soon coming f4 tele zoom as a well rounded and fairly compact kit.

I tried the DA50-200 and liked it. It is also a shame that Tokina does not make an AF version of its A70-210. I tried a Quantaray badged version and it was a tiny bit sharper at wide angle but a slightly less contrasty zoomed in. Not bad for $100.

Affordable and reasonable size telephoto will be a very good seller. Also fits most users needs and $$.

I don't know, the Sigma you refer to would be the EX70-200/2.8? It's a very fine lens indeed and I love it, but it's at its best from f4 on. At f2.8 it is good, on the level of a "mediocre" lens that's stopped down, but it gets better stopped down still... The colour rendition could be better and there are minor front/back focus problems when focussing at short distances, another point against f2.8 because of limited DOF. In short, I do try to avoid using it at 2.8 if I can... Rather push up the ISO one stop... This is also the reason why I'm not 100% happy with the new AutoISO on the DS, because it does allow wide open lens use before moving up in ISO...

If a DA60-250/4 is lighter and smaller, has Pentax's SMC coating (better colour/bokeh), is as good or better from f4 on (cfr DA16-45/4) and does not exhibit focus problems (less likely since not the cloned Sigma mount) it is bound to be preferrable!! Esp since you get a more flexible range...

A lot of ifs, so wait and see remains the message, but I think we will not be dissappointed...

Though this zoom may not be a professionals dream. I can see advanced amatures loving it since it fits there buget and hopefully can compete with the 16-45 quality wise. If it does the above I will be purchasing it when it is available.

I would love to see an updated 300/4 to compliment it though.
