Hi,

Are there commonly used 'nicknames' for the various camera manufacturers?

Olympus:

Canon:

Nikon:

Olympus is usually referred to as "Oly."

Pansonic as "Panny."

Long term users of Nikon cameras are sometimes referred to as Nikonians.

The cameras themselves have nicknames: The Olympus C2100 is simply called the "uzi" (ultra zoom).

No doubt others will fill you in on the rest.

A colleague of mine calls any camera a "Kodak"...
Interesting, I read a Swedish novel from 1930 using "Kodak" in the
same way. I guess Kodak was dominating the market back then (and
your friend lives in the past? :-) )

For the thread I can add "Fluzi" as a popular name for the Panasonic
FZ superzooms.

Hi,

Are there commonly used 'nicknames' for the various camera
manufacturers?

Olympus:
Oly, as others have mentioned...
Users are referred to as Olympians.

The 300mm f2.8 is often referred to as "the big tuna". I am not making that up, check the Oly SLR forum.
Sometimes referred to by the origional, religious name Kwanon. (This can be done either lovingly or insultingly).
Users are referred to as Canonites.

Either the 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS or the 70-200mm f4 IS is called "the pocket rocket". I can't remember which.

The 17-40mm f4 L is sometimes called the 17-40mm "h*ll" (because it's performance doesn't live up to what Canon shooters expect from an "L")
Occasionally refered to as "Big Yellow", as is Kodak.
Users are referred to as Nikonians.
The 28-70mm f2.8 AF-S is nicknamed "the beast"

Leica:

The company has no nickname.
Users are referred to as Leicaholics.

Sigma:

The company has no nickname.
Users are referred to as Sigmoids.
The 50-500mm is usually refered to as "the bigma"

Pentax:

The company has no nickname.
Users have no nickname, although I did suggest Pentaxidermists.
The 40mm f2.8 AF "pancake" lens is sometimes also called "the pocket rocket"

Fuji:

The company has no nickname.
Users are referred to as Fujistra (I may have misspelled that).

Lomo:

Users refer to the act of shooting a Lomo camera as "Lomography".

My flutes:

The C (normal sized) one is named "little Trevor".
The alto (40% larger) one is named "big Trevor".

This is because of a totally bizarre coincidence. The C flute was one of a very small number of flutes hand made in New Zealand by flutemaker Trevor Hutton. One of them somehow or other found its way half way around the world to me in Detroit. The alto was one of a huge number of flutes mass produced in a far eastern factory and given the impressive sounding name of "Trevor James". They're all over the place.

OK, that's all I've got.

Konica Minolta is often just KM, but traditionalist just call them Minolta since we reject the Konica name.
