OT: What 'pay' photo site/gallery do you use & why do you like it, etc?

Hi:

Long time ago I was with PBase but decided to go with Photoshare and it is a great site but I wanted to upload larger files and went with Imageevent a couple of years ago and I couldn’t be happier.

The tech support is right on the ball and answer any questions very fast.

$24.95 (U.S.) per year
$24.95 (U.S.) for additional 1500 Images – one time charge

$34.95 (U.S.) for large file access – one time charge (this is neat as I can upload up to 100MB at one time) came in great for my movies, Power Point Presentation, PDF files and other Microsoft programs.

You can prevent anyone right clicking and copying your images.

The Slide Show Feature is great and really neat when your friends can sit back and watch your pictures with it.

I’m now up to 9,000 Images (2.6MB Stored) and it only costs $24.95 (U.S.) per year.

I had a problem with the descriptions when I uploaded pictures from my Minolta 7D and working with the tech people to solve this, they gave me 1500 images free for my inconvenience.

Are you getting confused Jan?

CC – Life is good – no matter what storage site you use. – Just use them and show us pictures.

....where can you see the prices?

And do you make the items or do they? What sort of a 'cut' do you
get?
You set the prices on pro accounts, they process the orders. I think that people can order prints off the regular accounts if the owner allows it, but there is no profit for the photographer. On the pro accounts, the photographer gets 85% of the markup (the amount over their print prices), smugmug gets 15%. My prices are pretty cheap because most of my sales are for the parents of band kids, I donate that money to the band program.

Although you might think that the pro accounts are pricey, they can pay for themselves with new user referrals. Of course, if the product were bad, I wouldn't encourage anyone to sign up but it's a good service. You don't see any 'what happened to smugmug' threads.

Why in the world would you say such a thing? One in every crowd I guess. If this were true I do not thing pBase would enjoy the success that they have.

I have been using it since 2001 and other then one instance when they were upgrading/changing Servers Pbase has been great. For this time they did have problems the subscribers were credited months of fees.
Anytime I need tech assist pbase has come through.
Uploading or downloading is easy.
Linking is easy.
You can customize your galleries.
You can have galleries private and/or public.
I even run some business through the galleries of Pbase.

I my opinion it can not be beat. I presently have 450mG of infor on there, including galleries to very expensive sales (house).

I use pbase. I had never used a photo server before. Having got used to some of the intricacies of pbase, I am too lazy to get used to someone else's. There have been interruptions. Once a hotlink never got to work. Now, a new hotlink works after no longer than five minutes. I think it's to do with the amount of traffic. Pbase has got big. People looking for photos for a project go to pbase. I got into a US poultry calendar that way.

Ditto,

Pbase has has some bumps here and there but you can't beat the features it provides, searches by camera is so good to check out new camera types, I have spent spare time just going to "random" pics and see other galleries. There are so many oustanding photographers here.

I just pay an extra $10/month for a static IP address and keep a web server running in the basement --- I've got an ADSL2+ circuit that gives me 5Mbps down and 512kbps up which is more than adequate for the amount of hosting I do. I could have gone with a dynamic address and signed up for one of the dynamic dns services as well, but really prefer the 'real' address.....

that with all the red xs, the down time, the crappy compression and all problems I've read about on this forum, Pbase isn't reliable?

Good for you, but there are many people on the web that don't agree with you, just search and see how many Pbase's acting up again you find;)

event photography and photo journalism

leaves a lot to be desired.
It depends on what sorts of photos the gallery owner has uploaded. If they upload only 800px originals, and you have a 30" Apple Cinema Display, the photos will look bad. If, they upload larger files (there's no limit on storage of photos) then the photos will look better.

The other option is to use the slideshow that's in the "view style" dropdown box - like in this gallery:

All the best,

Andy
