Hi evribody

I have an Ibook g4 , which has no PCMCIA slot. Does anybody knows if there is a USB PCMCIA adapter where i could use pcmcia cards ?
Any help will be very welcome
Andre

I agree. I haven't found any need for a PC slot on my G4 iBook. The same is true for my Windows notebook. There seems to be some USB 2.0 device available for every need. Am I missing something here?

Well, it can be a really nice compact card reader. There is an adapter now that will take everything but CF cards and you can get another specifically for CF cards. It is very fast, probably faster than USB 2.0. Further, if you want to use Verison wireless you need a slot to take their wireless modem. There are also lots of other adapters of various capabilities that use the slot. I can surely see why they are there.

I'd like to thank everybody , but let me explain. I'm looking for a adapter PCMCIA/USB to use a Wireless Card in a apple iBook, which has no PCMCIA slot . As i live in Brazil, I'm facing some difficult to find one. If you could give me some brands or company names, i would appreciate.

And my question was:
what device can't yuo find for usb that you want to use with pcmcia?
Almost everything is available for usb that is available for pcmcia?

Why use first an adapter to pcmcia and then a device in that when you can use only one device straight in to the usb port?

Why don't you buy an Airport card and install it? Maybe it costs more in Brazil so you want to go the other route...

It either already has wireless built in or has a airport card slot under the keyboard

An alternative is to use a USB adapter.

But the Apple airport cards are best

The problem is that Verizon's ultrafast wifi requires their proprietary PCMCIA card, which is a really, really stupid thing for Verizon to have done, but I don't know of a solution for the ibook. I skipped Verizon, myself, for just that reason. Even on a pbook, I don't like having that fragile little atenna hanging out of the side of my computer when I've got a perfectly good card inside it. And having to plug and unplug it every time you pack up is a major nuisance.

However, I don't know that anyone except Verizon can fix this. :(

I know what you are trying to do. Hook up to a Cell Card, WAN type that uses cell phone for internet access. I am on one right now. AFAIK you can't do it on an iBook. I had to buy a powerbook just for this reason. I really looked hard and far but struck out. You can find a PC card adaptor for a desktop PCI slot plug in but not for a USB or Firewire connection. I have also used my PC slot to get a better Wifi connection than the built in Airport on the Powerbook which has a metal case to block the 802.11g. I will try to look later on tonight but I spent a few days this summer with a lot of tech support folks and struck out. Keep trying but it's going to be tough.

Thank you very much. Finally, someone understood what i was looking for. of course i have a airport card inside my computer, and it works very well, but to use it, is necessary a wifi hot spot like those is Starbucks cafes....What I'm trying to use is a Cell Card, provided by a Brazilian Wireless company, like TMobile or Singular in the US....

Does your iBook have bluetooth?

If so, you should check out http://www.novamedia.de (mobile high speed)

This software allows you to connect to the internet using your iBook and mobile phone over GPRS, EDGE or 3G.

I've used it successfully many times from the remote Lake District here in the UK on my iBook, SE T610 and the Orange UK network

Cheers

This is a good thread. I have not given up on this yet. My wife now has an iBook and we also have a RAZR Motorola phone. The idea for using your phone as a modem is a good one but the big problem is that we are on Macs. No support from almost anyone. But, but, there is a glimmer of hope. Smith Micro makes Quick Link Mobile a software that lets you use devices like the Verizon or Cingular Card on a Mac.

The big catch: is that you want to make sure that you have an UNLIMITED NO ROAMING plan.

I had the mobile internet option going on my Siemens phone, one month free trial. After 2 weeks I checked on how much usage and how much it would cost and it was $1200.

That is the catch to try to find a provider that will let you surf on an unlimited plan. I think T-Mobile may have had one in the past for cheap but I have to check again.

I'm going to do some checking on Cingular's data plan for phones as well as the Quick Link for bluetooth and see what I can come up with.

I got distracted by my new D200. At least the New Lightroom will open NEF's in CS2.
