80-200 vs 70-200 VR comparison shots?

If you are looking to buy and price isn't a concern than get the 70-200 VR 2.8 and if the budget is thin than get the newest 80-200 2.8 that you can afford. I used to own one of the push/pull ones and I loved it, but the newer versions have added benefits.....

Comparison shots would be tough to distinguish, especially at web based (resized) images. Optically they are very very close, obvious advantages of one over the other is the addition of VR. Any aparent differences in actual image quality would likely be due to that feature alone.

Thats my opinion, I do not own either lens, but have used both on more than one occasion.

Budget isn't a huge concern, but if the only difference between these lenses is the 70-200's VR and slightly better bokeh, I'd rather go with the 80-200 and save $600+ for other things (maybe other lenses). If, however, the 70-200 produces better images (sharpness, contrast, distortion, etc.) then I will probably buy it rather than getting the 80-200 and wishing I had bought the 70-200.

I started with the 80-200 (newest version) sold it and bought the 70-200 VR and I have never regret that.

The VR and faster focusing is worth it. If you like to shoot moving subjects, then buy the 70-200

Well, in all honesty, if budget is not your number one priority, I would go with the VR, you will never regret having that lens. However, you know your shooting needs and style better than we do, if you always shoot on a tripod, or rarely shoot moving subjects in low light than the 80-200 AF-S might just do.
Good luck and lets see if anyone posts some samples.

Haven't seen one yet. But this may help: if you check out http://www.nikonimaging.com , you can find the MTF charts of both lenses. This should give you some idea how they preform relative to each other (in theory).

Combining my experience with my 80-200D, samples from the web and the MTF charts, I think it's safe to say 70-200VR has better optical performance, especially at close focus.

I've been looking for comparison shots between the 70-200 VR and
the 80-200 AF-D Nikkor lenses to no avail. Can anyone point me to a
direct comparison (preferable across the zoom range and aperture
range)?

Thanks,
Adam
