I have been researching forums and reviews for a few week and have narrowed down to a few choices, but the final choice is proving difficult. Any pros or cons to the following list of possibilities would be appreciated.

Sony DSC-S75 or 85
Canon S30 or S40 (out soon)
Olympus C-3000 or 3040

I'm trying to stay in the $300 - $500 range, but am finding that the $500-750 range has what a want most.

One of the biggest questions I have is this: since the Sony S75 is 2 years old, will is stand up to the semi-equivelant S30?? The S75 has a faster lens and will be more in my target price range. Are there any real disadvantages to it???

Thanks alot,
Jeff

Jeff :

Having absolutely no experience with Sony cameras mentioned, I will not speak about them.

If I were to make the choice between the C3000 and the C3040, I would have to choose the C3040. However, Olympus just announced the C3020, which is an updated C3000, and looks like it is the best bet for your price range (499.00 estimated street price).

You can get the C3000 for around 369.00 to 390.00 from some of the online vendors. The C3040 would be the most expensive of the group.

A friend of mine has the C3040. He allowed me to borrow
it for a few days.
Fast lens. Takes nice close up photo's. A large buffer for
those quick shots. You won't be disappointed.
Get the Olympus and join us in the Olympus SLR forum.
Hope to see you there.

After reading about all these cameras, I would recommend the S30/S40. I started with Olympus cameras, moved to Nikon, and now have settled on Canon. Every time I go shopping (window), I end up with a Canon camera as my dream. I have a D30 now, and a G1. I've owned an Olympus d360, Olympus C2100 UZ, Nikon 880, Canon S10, and a Canon S300. I'm getting a G2 as soon as I get my Amex card, and I'm recommending an S40 for my wife (currently uses film). I can't say that the Sony cameras are worse, or better, their memory stick keeps me from considering them, though the Sony line seems to review well here. After reading so many reviews, I just feel that the G2/S30/S40 epitomizes the (non-slr) digital camera. The D30 in the Pro-sumer level, and the 1D in the Pro range. Just my opinion.

In all honsety I think you've summed up my feelings as well. I just hope the street price on the S30 is as reasonable as I'm hoping...
