Somehow I managed to knock up a bird hide on the steep slope of my farm dam in the hope of photographing a visiting kingfisher. All I managed to get was this brown honeyeater....But tomorrow is a new day and a new year. Stay safe and hope your new camera (well, the new models do come out awful quickly these days!) gets you a magazine cover or frontpage of daily newspaper in the new year.

Kevin, I was just headed to bed and stopped in. So glad I did, that's a gorgeous image.....composition/color/sharpness/focus....it has it all.

Kevin, your bird shots are always amazing and this one is no exception. I've only see a kingfisher at a zoo once, so I'm really looking forward to seeing your photos if you get some.

Hope you have a healthy, happy 2006!

Just trying to learn and it's slow going!

fantastic Kevin

having browsed through your other pics and looked at my first attempts with the new FZ30 it's difficult to believe they're from the same camera - which I guess speaks volumes about the skill of the photographer!

I'm particularly astounded at the sharpeness compared to my efforts so far, and although I'm sure you've been asked the question 100s of times I'd really like to know how you've got the fz30 set up. - Were you using any kind of telecon etc - and I assume a tripod!

Look forward to seeing the kingfisher!

who photographs birds from a hidie-hole. I hope it pays off and you get your Kingfisher. Meanwhile, this is a darn good honeyeater (a bird I don't have), picture and thanks for sharing. BTW, a kingfisher is one of my big trophies I want. I have a lot of them around but need to work on building that hidie-hole in the right place I guess.

Thanks everybody for the kind words. Martyn, I do not use any add on lenses. My settings are all standard (or default) except for contrast which is set to low (due to the very bright light in Australia). I use a tripod with OIS turned off, and use aperture priority. I use the EVF and blown highlight tool to work out the amount of exposure bias which can vary by a huge amount.

My favourite ISO is of course 80, and like most lenses I like to stop down a couple of F stops from wide open, - often at F6.3 to maximise sharpness. Looking thru the forum pics a lot of problems can be traced back to poor lighting as the root cause. Perhaps Panasonic will develop a powerful add on 'smart' flash for the next model.

PP is done with paintshop pro 9, resizing for the web is done via 'Infanview 3.97'. The strength of the FZ30 is the Leica lens and friendly ergonomics, its weakness is the limitations of the small sensor restricting ISO to 80 for best quality work. All things considered its a very good camera for the price.
