After a month of using the F11 I've put together a small gallery

http://www.apbc84.dsl.pipex.com/F11.html

Overall I think it's a good camera for what it is and most people should be pleased with it if they take some time to learn it and don't expect the moon on a stick (e.g. noise performance to rival a DSLR) and they get to grips with the menus and idiosyncrasies. My personal wish list for (not unreasonable) improvements:

Manually set both the aperture and shutter speed Lock exposure and focus separately
Have a timer mode, not have to reset it for every shot

Cheers.

Very nice ... I really like the low shot of the rope at night. Very cool ...

Uhhmm...about how long did it take to compose each of those shots? I have a fear that it would take ME an hour for each.

Truth be told, I'm a complete newbie, but I must say that your pics are bordering on the awe-inspiring for such a cheap little camera. I think I'm sold on the F11 as well.
Gosh, I hope those pics weren't fakes from a dSLR. :)

I love your night time photography, they are clear, sharp, filled with color and then very creatively taken with strong composition and use of existing color.............they are beautiful.

I know you posted some of these here and gave some exif info and that your not posting them for us, but I learn so very much from the exif info, I hope you and other will consider sharing that in your gallaries.

Thanks for sharing your art with us, I love the visit!

No, they're not fakes :-)

I think I've learnt to shoot a bit differently with the F11. It's small size and large LCD screen enable me to hold it differently, so you can brace it against objects and balance it on things. This can be very handy for getting night shots with the timer. It's much easier to carry around than a DSLR and the picture you take is always better than the one you missed because your big camera was at home!

Having said that, a DSLR gives you better noise performance and dynamic range and a lot more control. Adding an external flash and bouncing it off a white ceiling transforms indoor shots from those using a built in direct flash. Plus, of course, with DSLR you can change lenses for the task at hand.

To be honest it wouldn't have been possible to get most of the pictures on this page (taken with a 50mm F1.8 prime lens) with the F11: http://www.apbc84.dsl.pipex.com/Gigs.html

Cheers.

Love the shots, but gotta ask how much and what PP work was done?
Hello.

All of the shots had a bit of USM applied after resizing. I've also done some basic tweaks to some of the shots e.g. contrast adjustment or boosting the saturation (I shoot in normal mode rather than the higher contrast chrome mode as I like to decide whether to increase the saturation or not).

The black & white conversions were also done in post processing, but beyond that I don't think I've done anything exotic or that most people couldn't achieve in a few minutes using the photo editing software of their choice.

Cheers.

I got the first three with my F10..have many more like it....wouldn't have been able to get these with my D20 with any type of lens.....the buggers on the door wouldn't let me in with it!! So small can be better at times too!! http://homepage.eircom.net/~vmax/page1.html

P.s......your shot are cool....well done!

Nice shots indeed, looking forward to seeing more. I do like the B/W shot in the pub, that young lady in fishnets surely does look as if she has had enough "good cheer" for one night. Bet she had a headache the following day, LOL.

Taffy, love 602, looking forward to 7000, got S7000.

I have some questions:
  • Did u use a tripod?
  • What settings did u use for these beautiful night shots?
  • Did u Photoshop them or Neatimaged ?
Thanks in advance.
They are beautiful.

Hello Hagrid.

No tripod, although I did make use of various posts, walls and pillars to brace against or rest the camera on.

Nighttime shots were at a variety of settings. I think most were in Aperture mode at F4 ISO 400 with a few in the Night scene mode at ISO 80.

I tweaked some of the pictures for contrast and saturation in Photoshop Elements 2 - nothing extreme. All images had some unsharp mask applied after resizing.

No additional noise reduction done. As long as you keep to ISO 400 (limited to 1/4 second exposure in Aperture priority mode) I’ve found that noise isn't really visible after resizing the image for web use.

Cheers.

Thanks Perfect.

I have an F10 so I am not sure if I can keep the ISO to 80 if I shoot with Nightshoot or having F4 set by the camera if I use ISO400
Hovewer your pics let me think that I will wait some more before a DSLR.
The little Fuji's are very capable.
Have a fab 2006.Happy Shooting
