I'm looking for suggestions for a good walking around town bag. From the pictures on the website, I think one of the Lowepro toploaders might work for my purposes. I figured I would just take my D50 w/ 18-70 so it doesn't have to be huge; I think portability, easy access, and protection would be the main features to look for. I think a holster style might be good. What do you all use for this purpose?

Thanks!

Hi,

I got a Slingshot 200 AW fpr Christmast and love it because it is comfortable to walk (like a backpack) and verry easy to access (simply twisting around).

The big one is good for the D70 with 18/70 and mounted sun shade (right word?), some lenses and a flash. For the smaller one I think you have to detach the sun shade or mount it in opposite direction.

Happy new Year

I have a D50 too, used mostly (entirely actually - it's the only lens I have for now) with an 18 - 70 zoom. I've carried it extensively around Newcastle and London in a Crumpler Ben's Pizza bag (size xl). It just fits in there nicely without rolling around but isn't too tight to get out in a hurry. It's nicely padded and waterproof and isn't at all cumbersome. The Crumpler bag also doesn't look like a camera bag which was important to me. They come in a variety of colours but for my money plain black is best. Bought mine from a Crumpler dealer on eBay and saved a few quid. I can highly recommend it.

Get the Lowepro Slingshot 200 (the 100 will not fit a d50 with the 18-70 lens!). I even got the back for free (for those who can shop at Henrys in Canada).

I have the Lowepro Slingshot 100 and I fit all my lenses in this bag with ease. I either have the kit or the 50mm attached, Ive never tried to load the bag with the 70-300 attached but its in there.

Its a great walkaround bag. You can access your camera very quickly and comfortably without ever taking the bag off your shoulder.

I second the Slingshot 100. I fit my D70s with the kit lens, or 18-200 no problem, plus room for the Sigma 10-20, SB 600 flash, and my 50mm 1.8 and Stofen attachment for the flash. That pretty much fills it up...I put filters/hoods/etc...in the top compartment. You can also reverst hte hoods on the lenses. The kit lens will fit with the hood attached, but just barely....

I'll echo the Slingshot 200 suggestion. I just got Slingshot 200 a month or so ago. Went to Epcot with some guests, and it was great -- comfortable, accessible. Next day I was about to go to Seaworld, but decided to get just camera and 18-70. So, I put it into my LowePro TopLoad Mini, put it on the shoulder and ... decided to take the Slingshot anyway. Even though it's bigger, it's more comfortable to carry around than any shoulder bag.

Thanks for all the suggestions all. I checked out some toploader lowepro bags at my local shop; they are very nice. I put the d50 body w/ a long lens (sigma 70-300) in several of the models and had no problems fitting it into the Topload Zoom 2 (actually had room to spare). The Topload Zoom 1 was very snug; the lens actually bottomed-out in the case. The Topload Zoom Mini was too small for the body w/ that lens.

Zoom 2: 7W x 5D x 9.75H in. / 18 x 12.5 x 25 cm
Zoom 1: 6.5W x 4.5D x 7.75H in. / 16.5 x 11.5 x 19.5 cm
Zoom Mini: 6W x 4D x 6.5H in. / 15 x 10 x 16.5 cm

I don't like the "Classic" zoom cases since they are just water resistant. The "AW" or all weather versions come with a water proof sheet that covers them. Unfortunately the shop didn't have any of the AW flavors.

Zoom AW: 7W x 5D x 11.75H in. / 18 x 12.5 x 30 cm
Zoom 65 AW: 6.5W x 6D x 8H in. / 16.5 x 15 x 20 cm
Zoom 70 AW: 6.5W x 6D x 10H in. / 16.5 x 15 x 25.5 cm
Zoom 75 AW: 7W x 6D x 12.5H in. / 18 x 15 x 32 cm

Having not seen these in the flesh, I can only speculate that the Zoom 70 AW would fit the d50 w/ 70-300 lens. I'll probably order one at some point.

I have the Lowepro Off Trail 1. I can fit my D50 and Sigma 70-300mm. It's snug, but fits. I can also take the side pockets off, so I just have the main bag with the camera with me. It's nice, if I know I'm not going to need to change lenses.

Hi Irene

Depends what you want to put in it, I've checked the XXL out and am considering buying it because I like to carry my SB800 around as well as the D70/lenses.
What do you have in your bag ?
In my XL I have (for example) the camera/17-55 mm in the middle. On one side I usual have my 60 mm micro and on the other side there's a bit of room for my dearly loved Hoya R72 infrared filter, driving licence/money etc. In the front flat pocket I have spare batteries for the SB800, a spare battery for the D70, a pringles cap, front cap for the camera.
Do you have a picture with your bag and the content i would realy

I'm at work just now, but I'll try and get back to you later.

I've got a Tamrac Velocity 7 which is a toploader. I carry my D70 with lense (kit or zoom), a Sigma 70-300, and a 50mm 1.8. An SB-800 will not fit unless you only want to carry the lens mounted to the camera.

The bag is not large so it can be a little tight. But, it's comfortable.

It's carried on the should so you can easily swing it around to the front.

It's a good bag for walking around but not a good one for carrying a lot of gear.

When I bought my D70 I went through much hand-wringing deciding what bag to carry it in. My main "walk-around" lens is the Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8, which is rather large, especially with the lens hood on. This bag works great for me. It's the Tamrac 519 Pro Zoom Pak http://www.tamrac.com/welcome.htm ), about $55 from B&H. There's room enough in the main compartment for this camera/lens combination and the camera strap. The pocket on the front is roomy, but barely big enough to hold an SB-800 flash. The two sidecars are what Tamrac calls its Modular Accessory System, or MAS. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. I have a medium-sized rectangular one for filters and such and a medium-size cylindrical one for one extra lens.

I found the nylon strap that came with the bag to be a bit uncomfortable when this large bag is fulll of gear. So I bought one with better padding. This is from a manufacturer called Eagle Creek. It was something like $30.

I usually carry the Tamrac with the strap across my chest. This, for me, is the most comfortable carry, and I don't worry about it falling off or getting taken off my shoulder. When I have the camera out, I just hang it around my neck by the camera strap, which happens to also be a Tamrac item with a suede pad for the neck. This is a great rig for travel. I position it behind me for easy walking, and slide it to the front when I want to get to it. The limits are that once you've filled the bag and two outriggers, that's it -- unless you buy the belt Tamrac sells, then you can strap bags all the way around your waist. I bought one, but have never used it.

Hi,

In my bag I have the D50 body and the 18 - 70 lens. Some poor quality pics should be embedded here if I've done this right (my first time so apologies if they don't show). Only been using the D50 for a month and already I'm forgetting how to use the old Canon G3 these were taken with.

Sorry that I aint a pretty boy model either! :-)

David.

No problems, its great that you answer. I think that iam leaning more and more to the xxl since i also recieved my first extra lens today, the 70-210 wich i have to try out at once :0)

Thanks for your reply

I just picked up a 7 million dollar home (prob too big for your needs) and it is awesome. Best part is that it doesnt look like a camera bag. Crumpler makes some top notch stuff, and the price reflects that, but it is worth it.

fyi - in my 7 million I keep:

1) d70 with tokina 12-24+hood
2) 18-70 afs
3) 28-200
4) 50 1.8
5) SB-600
6) 60mm macro (coming tomorrow)
7) various filters, cards, cables, and other goodies

All that and there is still a lot of room left. I could probably fit an 80-200 f2.8 in there and another sb600.

My point is, get a crumpler that fits your needs. You might want to look at the 5 or 6 million dollar home. You wont be disappointed.

It was in a packaged deal w/ a spare EN-EL3(a) battery, 52mm UV filter, an okay Nikon School book and a nikon bag... I really like the bag, it's of sturdy construction (imo), has room for two lenses and other accesories (though all the compartments are adjustable)...

I probably would not have gone that route, but I had a lot of BB gift cards from xmas and the battery alone is $40.00 plus shipping online... anyway, just my 2 cents, i'm sure there are much better bags out there, but this one works well for me...
