I've just had a reply from canon about my request for a Mac SDK. This is what they have say:

Dear Colin,

Unfortunately at the moment there is not sufficient demand for a Mac version
of the SDK (since the programme was launched only about 4% of all developers
have requested Mac support).

The same applies for Linux and other non-Windows operating systems. Because
we provide the SDK and support for free, it isn't possible to develop the
SDK to support multiple platforms.

This situation is reviewed regularly and so we collate all requests received
and send them to Canon Inc (tokyo) regularly to ensure that they are aware
of the situation in Europe.

Kind regards,
Alison Mitchell

So if you want decent software for the Mac I suggest that you all e-mail Canon and tell them how much you would like them to change thier minds. With any luck if enough of us keep badgering them they should release something, if only to get some peace.

For those of you in europe email: [email protected]

I'm not sure about the US address if anyone knows what it should be please post it below.

Now stop reading this and get typing!

Colin; I don't have a D30 but a Minolta D7 but I'm curious: what is SDK and what does it do for you ? The D7 has a conversion program after which you can use photoshop - it that what you mean ?

Henri,

SDK is a Software Developers Kit. It is a set of tools and documentation that allows other developers to write programs that interact with the Canon (or whoever's SDK you are working with) programs and file structures.

Hi;

I am just about to buy an ibook and a d30. Are you saying that I will not be able to use the camera's software on my mac?

Hi Deano,

No problem using the Canon software for the D30, its just not very good and there are very limited 3rd party options because Canon haven't released a SDK....!!

Personally I use the D30 plug-in and convert RAW directly into Photoshop. It is better than the Canon ImageBrowser software but what us Mac users really need is a Mac version of Breezebrowser....a great PC program. Perhaps when Canon release the SDK for the 1D then we will get some decent programs for the D30 as well...can only hope.
Enjoy your D30 and ibook :-))

John,

Could you please tell me what plug-in your refering to. I'm getting ready to jump ship to Mac and I use the D30 and this could make my jump more like a step.
Thanks, Ken A

John;

What is the plug-in for?
I thought you could just open the files with photoshop like the d1

When I rent the d1 I transfer the images from the cf card to the mac and it just shows up on the desktop like another hard drive. Then I simply open the jpg files in photoshop.

Deano,

The plug-in is for converting RAW images directly into Photoshop as a TIFF or JPG. RAW images are directly from the camera's CMOS without any in-camera processing, which can then be applied in PS. If you shoot as JPG then you can directly read into PS or other image program. BTW the D1 also has its own form of RAW format and a similar plug-in is required for conversion.
