I'm happy to say Santa brought me a D200 this Christmas to complement my beloved D70. It took a little tweaking to optimize the output, but I think as all the RAW converters start supporting this camera, we'll see better and better results. Personally, I'd prefer NOT having my camera act as the converter!

So here's a few shots from yesterday...all the food is shot w/ 50mm 1.8 at ISO100, various apertures w/ tripod using in-restaurant lighting. The D200 is really close to spot-on WB & Matrix Metering, but I still tweaked it a little to in C1 Pro [w/ pre-prod D200 support].

Beautiful colors, nice shots!

I love shooting available light with that 50mm 1.8...really amazing, cheap little lens.

Good work. Great compositions and excellent white balance for the setting. The only issue have is the bokeh on that 50mm f 1.8 (and 1.4 version isn't any better either). The OOF specular highlight rendition on that lens is quite ugly and distracting. I wonder if 60 macro would do a better job.

What kind of flash did you use??

Wonderful photos, so sharp!

Can't wait until I get my D200 + 18-200 + 50 f/1.8.

No flash or strobes used...I usually only have 30 minutes to get in/get out so I use available light...Normally I'd try to use a table next to a window and turn off the overhead incandescents, or even set up a table outside in the shade, but yesterday was dark & rainy so I had to shoot with inside lighting, which IMO creates nasty dark shadows. The real trick with food is getting proper white balance and no color casts [from different types of light sources]. I'm still learning; I really only have experience shooting food using available light due to time constraints, although I know it can get very complex for commercial work.

Thanks for the comments :)

Which software do you use for RAW convertion ? What is the setting ? They are very sharp !!!

Hi Chris

Great shots. Very "tasty" pictures.

I would have liked more DOF on all the food shots (except the first), so at least the whole plate was sharp. That would have made them exceptional. The defocused background serves the pics well. The first foodshot (second picture) is exactly how I mean.

The series as a whole is nice and a great advertisement for the restaurant in question.

Thanks Jens, if you like take a look at the gallery links at the bottom - I usually take 3-5 shots at varying apertures for each "pose", from shallow 1.8 --> the deeper F11. I just picked a couple of my favorites for the post. Usually there's other elements in the frame that are distracting when in focus since I don't always make/take the time to move stuff around before shooting :)

For these I used C1 Pro, no "special" settings...I think only C1, Bibble and Nikon Capture currently have any kind of support for the d200 at this time.

I use Pixmantec Rawshooter most often as I believe it's the best combo of workflow & quality. I used to revert back to PSCS2 for good skin tones but the new color profiles from RSP negate that need. C1 is a close 2nd to RSP workflow-wise, and may have an edge in quality, but lacks the sophisticated controls. Nikon's software has always been way too slow to be usable for large #s of files, and IMO is only 2nd or 3rd in output IQ, so I avoid it completely these days.

As for sharpness, use a good lens and just as importantly, good shooting technique!
