I've just had a reply from canon about my request for a Mac SDK. This is what they have say:

Dear Colin,

Unfortunately at the moment there is not sufficient demand for a Mac version
of the SDK (since the programme was launched only about 4% of all developers
have requested Mac support).

The same applies for Linux and other non-Windows operating systems. Because
we provide the SDK and support for free, it isn't possible to develop the
SDK to support multiple platforms.

This situation is reviewed regularly and so we collate all requests received
and send them to Canon Inc (tokyo) regularly to ensure that they are aware
of the situation in Europe.

Kind regards,
Alison Mitchell

So if you want decent software for the Mac I suggest that you all e-mail Canon and tell them how much you would like them to change thier minds. With any luck if enough of us keep badgering them they should release something, if only to get some peace.

For those of you in europe email: [email protected]

I'm not sure about the US address if anyone knows what it should be please post it below.

Now stop reading this and get typing!

Colin,

Thanks for your post.

There is some discussion going-on about this topic on this thread;

Could you share the e-address of Alison Mitchell?

Thanks,

I have tried in the past to get a group on this, the canon and MAC forum to email but not much success. The USA email address is the same as the europe one except instead of europa use USA. I am almost certain about this. I think we should all write to them. mark

I've just had a reply from canon about my request for a Mac SDK.
This is what they have say:
Rob Galbraith mentioned in his review of Canon's software for the upcoming 1D that Canon had committed to releasing an SDK for the 1D in the first half of 2002 for both Windows and Mac. There's no guarantee the SDK could be used for the D30 because of the difference in the RAW formats, but there is hope.

Also, if Canon makes the 1D's software available for D30 users, that won't solve the problem of not having an SDK for 3rd party developers, but it will give Mac users a professional program to use.

Rob's article on the 1D software is at http://www.robgalbraith.com/diginews/2001-09/2001_09_28_eos1d_software.html

I'd say there's zero chance of getting an SDK for the Mac specifically for the D30 at this point, but given how aware Canon is of how much people hate Zoombrowser and Imagebrowser, its conceivable that once the 1D software is ready, it will be made available to both 1D and D30 owners.

Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part. We're a mixed platform house here, my desktop machine is a PC but I love the Mac laptops and hope to get the little iBook at some point, just as soon as I can convince my wife that she really wants a Powerbook so she'll give me her iBook :) Maybe after the major revisions to the Powerbook next spring ...

Given that they provide software that works, I don't see them going out of their way to develop a Mac SDK. I guess I'm surprised that they even bother with a Windows SDK.

"Works" is one thing, ..."works BETTER" is another.

Doesn't it seem likely that ANYTHING, made by anyone, that makes using a Canon camera more fun, more productive, or easier just might influence someone to PURCHASE that same Canon camera, over a competitor's product? So a $50-$100 piece of software on which SOMEONE may make a little profit, could help sell a multi-$thousand camera/lenses setup for Canon.

So should Canon encourage such "improvement"?

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Hello:

I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what SDK stands for. I've gotten by so far without it I don't even know if I need it or not. Will someone enlighten me, Please?
Thanks,
Steve

Wouldn't it be a nice gesture if Canon released a "Beta" Mac SDK with an explicit note that it is not something Canon intends to actively support, but may be used by developers... [such as Eric of Bibble fame!]

Meanwhile, I did send a message to the address
[email protected]

and it did not bounce anyway!
