bailing on Dell (Or Dell bailing on me)

Wow. After I recommended Dell yesterday, I got my package today... and guess what! No camera.

When I called them, they said " We can hope that the camera ships within 24 to 48 hours, but I really have no idea when it will actuallly go out."

ok ok ok I didn't believe those who claimed Dell had terrible customer service; that Dell would treat me badly. But boy was I wrong.

I guess I learned my lesson.

Hmmm, now who will I buy my next PC from? (it won't be Dell).

I love Dell PC's. They are reasonably priced and reliable.

My next PC will definitely be a Dell. But I have no intention of ever buying a camera from them. That's like buying tacos at McDonald's. It's possible, but why would you do it? :)

I hope Dell does indeed keep to their commitment. I know it doesn't help you, but they just surprised me this morning.

I ordered a Epson 1280 printer from Dell on Monday 10/15. Web site clearly stated they were out of stock. Got my confirming email that they had an expected shipping date of 10/18.

Imagine my surprise when the printer shows up at my office in California this morning (shipped UPS Ground). Great for me, but speaks poorly for their inventory control. Either that or they got in a shipment in time to fill my order and to meet the shipping cutoff Monday (and I believe in the Tooth Fairy, Santa, and the Easter bunny!)

Hope they get your camera to you quickly as quickly as I got my printer!

Yes, I had a similar experience as others...

Got an e-mail saying my G2 would ship 10/25, but it arrived the NEXT morning...about 17 hours after I placed the order on the other side of the country.

Can't complain there...

But I understand the frustration in being told "it will ship sometime soon."
 
Dell customer service has collapsed over the past year. If you go over to InfoWorld, an enterprise computer web site, the "Gripe Line" now sees more complaints from Dell than any other. They used to get nothing but praise. My guess is that the horrible economy and continually eroding profit margins on PCs have caused Dell to cut back. Something had to give and it looks as if service was the first to go. You can't get something for nothing.

Dell and Gateway are top companies. When this thing shakes out they will be tops, again, because that's the corporate mentality of these companies. I'm sure there's chaos "back at the ranch" right now, with thousands getting pink slips. There's no other way when companies produce their products without any "fat" in their budgets for lean times. It's the price we all pay for the kind of vicious competition that keeps prices rock bottom.

Be patient with them. There's quality in the company, even if you can't see it right now.

I'm the satisfied owner of 5 Gateway computers over a period of 10 years.
I consider Dell and Gateway to be equally great companies.
I continue to favor Gateway because of their local "Country Stores".
But I think Dell does a very fine job.
And I happen to think that either company is superior to the competition.

When I hear someone saying they won't buy a computer from a company because they got poor delivery on a camera, what I hear is that they are "cutting off their nose to spite their face." A foolish choice.

I think you should check you order status today. I think I ordered my G2 within minutes of when you ordered yours based on your posting yesterday. I was told when I was ordering mine that the expected shipping date was 10/29. I checked the status today and it shipped yesterday and is in transit with UPS. I expect it will arrive tomorrow or Monday. Dell does pretty well considering the volume they process. Good luck and have fun with your G2

It's amazing, I expected to get it after 2 weeks, not it's coming. I should have asked for next day delivery :)

just the microdrive (which I can't use w/o the camera)

this is all just frustrating. I would be ok if they didn't tell me it was shipped already when it hadn't or at least could tell me when it was shipping. They told me to look at the Web site to see when it ships. But it says there that it shipped on Monday. Seems like a real lack of information and poor service.

As to who I will buy my computers from, it will have to be Apple. Fastest computers, awesome customer service, they look good inside and out. If I need another windows machine, I will have to buy Dell, as they definitely make the best windows boxes (IMO). Although I do worry about the quality going down there as well.

No, it's nothing like buying tacos at McD's. Buying a DELL camera would be like buying tacos at McDs because Dell doesn't make cameras, they make computers. Buying a Canon camera from Dell because they have the best price is just common sense. It's the same camera you would get from Adorama, B&H, Norman, Ritz, etc so who cares who's warehouse it is sitting in, especially if Dell has the best price? If you could buy Taco Bell tacos from Taco Bell for $.99 each or Taco Bell tacos from McD's next door for $.49, which would you buy? They are the same tacos, just different places to buy them and different prices.

Now I'm hungry...

I believe I ordered about the same time yesterday. Their site now states "Delayed Items - Currently one or more items are not available. Every effort is being made to complete your order." Still with the estimated ship date of 10/29. Sara - guess you're the lucky one.
