Going from 17-55mm to 28-70mm ..

You are saying that the 17-55's f2.8 performance ie better than the 2.8 performance of the 28-70? Have pics to prove this?
You'd mentioned about shooting in low light. 17-55 will serve best
at 2.8 & is ideal for low light whereas to get the best results out
of 28-70, you'll need to shoot at around 5.6

No need for him to prove it -- it's already been done here numerous times. It's a well known fact the 17-55 is sharper and has better contrast at F2.8 than most any other zoom on the planet. I am of the opinion it is designed that way because it also suffers when well stopped down.

I use the 17-55 and don't think I could give up the wide coverage (you actually lose a lot more at the wide end than you'll gain at the long end with the 28-70). I may actually pick up a 35-70 2.8 to use with the 17-55 while it still has the rebate.

I think I have read about this before... but do not remember seeing pics (about the 2.8 performacne), but not about the smaller aperature performance... do you have any likes to examples to compare? Thanks...

I don't fully understand your question -- might just be me, I'm loaded up with cold meds and about half goofy -- but I don't have both so can't supply comparison shots. There have been test shots posted by others in the past that show the 17-55 to be sharper / have more contrast wide open, roughly equal in the mid aps, and the 28-70 is clearly better when well stopped down. This is confirmed in various pro reviews.

PhilY,

With the xmas holiday, I came around to do some more sick (as considered by my wife) brick-wall test. I realize my 17-55 @ the wide-end shows "dissolved" constrast at the corners at f/2.8. (Sorry, can't think of a better word to describe it.) Also, it's pretty obvious to me it performs better at the long-end than the wide-end.

Do you have similar observations? (These days, it's hard to know if it's the property of the lens or it's sample variation because of poor QC.)

Women just don't understand us do they, John. I tend to ignore my wife when doing lens tests. :)

My copy also shows some lessening of contrast in the extreme corners at 17MM when shot wide open. This has never proved to be an issue in real world shooting, though, for a couple of reasons. I don't normally shoot F2.8 at 17MM and if I do, the corners are out of the DOF so a small loss of contrast doesn't matter. What you have to be careful of with the 17-55 at typical brick wall distances is to be sure you're not seeing the effect of incorrect focusing at 17MM. My copy will focus short if I'm not careful and what you can get is a shot with the center in focus and the corners slightly out of the DOF due to the longer target distance. Focus on the wall at 17MM (tripod mounted) noting the position of the focus indicator. Then zoom to about 24MM and refocus while noting if the indicator position changes. If it does change even slightly, try focusing at 24MM and zooming out to 17 to take the shot to see if the corner "contrast" improves any. If you still have focus on the shutter release, you will have to switch the lens to manual before zooming back to 17 to take the shot.
