SMUG or PBASE???

For easy upload and storing lots of photos on the web for family to view, I ended up getting a flickr account. You can get a limited account free if you have or sign up for a free yahoo mail account. The Flickr "pro" account is something like $25 a year. You can download a program that lets you drop and entire files into it and it will automatically upload all of them. I had over 300 old family photos that I had scanned and wanted to upload, and it was very easy. It is at http://www.flickr.com

Well I too recommend smugmug. I've been very happy with the service. Prices go up at the end of the year so sign up before the years end and you'll be grandfathered in at the lower price. Here is my discount code

ihjJWx5ZivAO2

If you use it we both get a discount.

Pbase can be good too but their servier goes down often and many people are getting frustrated with that. Keep us posted as to your decision.
Good Luck!

I am very happy with smugmug and constantly frustrated by pbase when I try to look at photographs that friends have there - it's soooooooo slow.

When I was looking for a service 14 months ago, the two candidates that I seriously considered were pbase and smugmug. In a separate thread just yesterday http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=16366855 , I gave my thoughts on why I chose smugmug and why I've been very pleased with it so far.

Also, many services have a free 7-day free trial including smugmug so you should definitely just try out any services you are considering. More than 9 out of 10 people who try smugmug stay on the service - presumably that number speaks for itself. In any case, definitely check out the link above as I included a lot of details about smugmug.

Smugmug discount coupon '3elo1xh75JSiI' to save $5

I've done before, so I know it can be done. Now I just have to remember how I did it. I think I just right clicked on the image and then chose "copy image location" (I use Firefox for my browser; not sure what option IE will offer if that is what you use) and then pasted that url for the photo page into my message and put ".jpg" after the url. We will see if that works:

To post a picture from flickr: Go to "View All Sizes" Choose the size you want to post and copy the Static Url that the display at the bottom of that page directly into the forums text box. It couldn't be easier.

There are lots of threads about this subject

I've settled on Smugmug. Good support, unlimited uploads, auto-resizing, easy-sharing. Very customizable, but you have to know CSS to get away from cookie-cutter look.

The galleries on Smugmug are very flexible, but control interface is fragmented and amateurish (no worse than PBase).

Professional account allows guest logins and individual print pricing.

Smugmug uptime is excellent.

PBase seems to have more art photographers and searches bring up some great photos. Smugmug has far more family pictures.

As a service, I think Smugmug has it right and is always working to improve.

I just got the Nikon D70s my first time with DSLR. I am looking into a webhosting service that will be economical at the same time will hold a lot of high-res large size photos. How about http://www.siteground.com? What do you think of their offering (12gig space)?

Why not smugmug which is quite popular here at dpreview? They have unlimited storage (I upload tons of originals, never downsizing before upload) and are only $29.95/yr if you sign-up before the end of the year. See http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=16366855 for a lot more info on them.

I've never heard of sitegruund.com so I can't offer you any info on them.

Thank you for enlightening me. That is half the price of what siteground is charging me for one year. Smugmug seems like they understand the needs of photographers.

Glad it looks like what you want. Smugmug is all about photographers. The principals in the company are major photographers themselves. They even organize photo shoots that members can join in on. Last summer they went to Yosemite. This spring they are going to Bryce and Zion.

Feel free to drop into http://www.dgrin.com if you have any more questions about smugmug. Or their customer service at [email protected] is very prompt at answering questions too.

If you sign up, make sure you use a discount code to save $5. My code is '3elo1xh75JSiI' (without the quotes). And, you should know that their prices will be going up on Jan. 1st, but existing members will be kept at the old prices for at least several years - so if you think you want to try it out, there's a big reason to do so before Jan. 1st (to get in on the old pricing).
