It takes exactly as much time as loading a picture on a regular site... you guys are unbelievable... you see Flash and you just refuse it... sometimes I feel like you guys are just purely against progress.... it feels like the CD against LP discussion 20 years ago...

A picture is a picture.... it takes the same time to load on a regular HTML site and on a Flash site... it takes less than 10 second from the time you click the link to my site to when you can see some pictures. As I said to someone else. If the viewer doesn't have 10 seconds of time, then I really don't want them on my site anyways....

Thanks, that will be the next step...

This site is the refreshened version of something I had on a different site. The content is pretty much the same... I have worked on the design part mostly in phase I. Phase II requires me diving in those folders and start removing pictures... It's not gonna be pretty!

One question for you: do you think I should be VERY selective also in the recent work galleries? Any idea of what should I keep in mind while doing this? Thanks!

By the way, I just re-read my post and found it harsh...

I don't mean that if you don't like my site you can't post a comment... but PLEASE do not complain about speed.... Any regular HTML site with thumbnails and large pictures will have to upload both of them and therefore use the EXACT same time.... it's the Internet, it works that way. At least my site preloads the images so that you can quickly switch through them... Besides speed any other comment is greatly appreciated. I really want to make the site better, but don't ask me to go back to HTML... it would be like going to a cubist painter and telling them "I don't like it... I can't understand what is your painting about... takes too much time to understand...".... I like flash and I am sticking with it. Thanks

I like it. It doesn't seem that slow to me here on the other side of the world. Also it is good that progress is seen while the thumbnails are being loaded. This forum is not necessarily the best place to place such a request - not many buyers here :-(

May I ask did you do all the Flash programming yourself in Flash 8 or did you use a development tool? I have to make the transition to a more modern look myself...

Cheers

I dont think that it would be particularly constructive to get too specific about what "I" think is good or bad. That would just be "my" opinion. If you spend some time looking at great photos by the photographers you admire, you should aim for that standard of work. The more selective you are, the more impressive your site will look. You definitely have enough good shots to make an impressive site you just need to be harder on yourself and take the plunge. If you have 20 or 30 great shots, you will get a better response than if you have 100 so-so ones.

The great thing about web graphics is you can crop to the essential quality element of a shot, the interesting part, the aestheticly pleasing bit or the impactful bit. You have allready done this with great effect with the thumbnails, highlighting just certain aspects of the image under the thumbnail. I'm sure you have enough pixels to play with that you could do the same thing (to a lesser degree) with the actual images. By cropping a little more and chucking out the so-so stuff you could have a more impressive site

Do you do websites for other people?

I had the same problem. It kept putting my stuff in the latest folder.

I think PS puts stuff where you put the file that you used when you made the action.

It's supposed to do it where you tell it to but it never really worked for me either and I tried a bunch of time.

I think you have to play with that save as command but still, it's too damn finicky and a pain to get to do it right.

Yep, dpreview crowd doesn't seem to enjoy flash...

I did it by myself. started from the design, which was vaguely inspired at a template i have seen once on a site that I cannot find anymore. then tried to put it together with some help from several actionscript forums. Took me about 2 weeks to do it (working only few hours per night of course).
It was an interesting experience.

Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

One thing that would be cool (that I haven't seen done) is to have a star-rating system under each photo (as Netflix, or Adobe Bridge uses) to rate each photo quickly on a scale from 1 - 5 stars (5 being best) and then have on your server a process to keep track of all ratings and average them out (for your own purposes). That way, over time, you'd get a feel for the general consensus of which are the favorite and which the least favorite images.

The above is great advice from Buchan Grant. Less is more.

Im in the middle of editing my new Vietnam gallery and editing down ones own photos is harder than that act of taking the photos in the first place.

My latest 5D gallery, Bali, bikinis, bikes, beaches, babies.

I am really surprised....

Sorry to hear about ur bad experience on my site... it's always disappointing to hear that some one has a totally different experience than I have... for me is pretty fast... less than 10 secs from homepage to seeing the first picture in an album (after clicking on the menu)
