Hey Everyone,

I wanted to test the slowsync flash feature of the 7D and 5600 flash so I grabbed one of my models (my wife's cousin) and headed of to the college campus nearby. Slowsync works great except that I should have used a tripod to make up for the slower shutter speed. But like I said this was just a test, nothing more.

Enjoy.

5600 flash - normal mode - ISO 100 F3.2 1/60 sec

5600 flash - slowsync mode - ISO 100 F2.8 1/3 sec

Sean,

It's good to practice all the commands. I was in Egypt in October and had a great shot if only I could have remembered how to get it in slow sync mode. It's hard for me to remember all the functions.

If you raised the ISO on those shots to ISO400 you could have shot at 1/12 th second. You are really steady, that is a good shot hand-held at 1/3 sec.

Thanks Pete. I plan on shooting at this location again in the spring and I will use a tripod to help steady the shot.

Thanks for posting these - really instructional, as I haven't ever used that feature.

in 5D's scene mode for night portrait, is that effectively uses slow sync to achieve the effect? It works quite well the last 2 times I tried it...

The night scene in the 5D should be using slow sync settings. Glad to hear that you got good results.

Rich, its so easy. Just setup the shot then push and hold the Auto Exposure Lock(AEL) button. Presto, slow sync.

Is there a difference between Slow Sync
and Shutter Priority mode
(if you pick a shutter like 1/3 sec)?

Nice comparison. Maybe you should have used ISO400 or 200. For flash photography I always use 400 if low light, or 200 if medium light.

The result are more balanced.

Matt,

I believe that if I had used the same F stop and shutter speed as the slow sync setting then the picture would look the same. What I will test is how much the flash varies for a shot like this. i.e. does ithe flash throw more light in shutter/aperature priority than in slow sync mode. Ahh, more testing.

You could have got a similar ambient balance at ISO800 and 1/25s.
It'll sharpen up the image a lot and get the same look.
