Has anyone purchased from Adorama before? They seem to have pretty good deals. But on their amazon feedback, there's a mixed review of both positives and negatives.

I plan to just visit the store in NYC, but I hope it's not one of these stores who will sell you refurnbished items or items missing product inside. Thanks!

twice, I was spammed by them.

first time, a week after I placed an online order. I emailed one of the managers there, and he was very apologetic and said they had a glitch and would take my name off the spam list.

a week or two later, I got another spam from them.

I will not be buying from them again. I have lost confidence that they can do what they claim.

Adorama is one of the three most recomended photography stores on most forums. The other two being B&H and KEH. Do a search here, at photo.net and on other forums. I've used all three stores many times without a glitch.

I've bought stuff from Adorama many times over the last 20 years and have never been unhappy. Once, I bought a pair of binoculars which I didn't like, and they gave me no trouble at all about returning it and sending me another pair. So I wouldn't worry if you know exactly that you want. Dealing with a saleman in the store might be a different matter, though, because they will naturally try to sell you something that maximises their commission. I doubt you have to sorry about stripping out things that come in the box and selling them as extras or substituting off brand lenses with SLRs or any other tricks like that.

When I was doing senior high school pictures for some folks: I ordered one package of letter sized Epson Enhanced Matte paper. They sent it in a mailer. Every corner of every sheet (50 sheets) was either wrinkled or crinkled. I could not use any of it for final prints. Made it impossible to deliver final prints at the time promised.

I have lost interest in doing business with Adorama.

I have never purchased from Adorama, but I have purchased from B&H. They are honest and reliable and located in a safe neighborhood.
Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

I've ordered through them quite a few times and been happy but my last order they did a number of incorrect things:

1) Provided an incorrect tracking number. One that delivered to my same city so I was looking around my whole house and asking my neighbors if they had it. UPS only provides city delivered to when you look up the tracking info. Very un-fun. Not sure where the heck they got the number from that they gave me.

2) Web site had a different tracking number (which was also incorrect) and also incorrect shipping date.

3) They took many days to ship the items and I had to call to find out what was really going on. They acted like it was no big deal that all of the information given to me was wrong.

It was a small order so I wasn't any big deal. I for sure wouldn't trust them with a large $$ order now.

Them and BH have almost the same prices, but I've never had problems with BH so I will use them mostly from now on.

Have ordered many times and it's always been right. This is not a store you have to worry about.

As for the "spam" comment from another poster, I don't know what he means by spam. They send out emails as all camera stores do that I've purchased from, including B&H, Ritz, etc.

I would proceed without worry.

I've been spammed by Adorama too. As a result, I don't do business with them. I've never been spammed by B&H. If you order from Adorama, just don't give them your e-mail address.

I'll splain it to you, lucy ;-)

spam is unwanted and unasked for email.

when I ordered from them, I was sure to check (or uncheck ) the box saying 'do not mail me'. a week later, I got some 'coolpix are hotpix!' spam. I asked jerry about it (a store manager) and he said there was a mistake in their web programming or database or data merge or something. ok - you can use that excuse once. they said they'd delete my name from their advertisement list and I thought that was that. a week or two later, another spam came thru. after that, I used my sneakemail.com 'powers' and disabled that throw-away email addy. but if I had given my actual non-throwaway addr, I'd be REALLY annoyed.

you don't understand. or you don't care. but spam is spam and some of us DO care and DO NOT WANT IT.

you act as if its their RIGHT to annoy you with useless junk email. its not anyone right once the receiver has said 'bastante!'.

I have placed a dozen or so orders with BH over the years and have never gotton spam from them. not once.

BH is not perfect, but at least they have respected my wishes not to be advertised to.

Betty,

Adorama is well known even over here in Europe.

Several years ago I ordered one of their "own brand" products, for delivery in England, and everything went smoothly and quickly.

From this distance I'd say they're about as good as suppliers can be - sure, there will always be a few problems and the internet is a great tool for complainers to make their grievances known. But then again some buyers are also less than scrupulous (I really hate those "I did the wedding shoot and then sent it back for a full refund" messages!).

I don't think an operation of their size would still be in business if they weren't getting most things right, most of the time - and I'd have no hesitation in buying from them again if the need arose.

It is not the norm for us to spam anyone! If you received an e-mail from us, and I use the term 'if', then it was definitely a computer glitch, and we certainly do apologize.

I am a Canadian living in the Middle East where there is no address system as we know it (every body uses PO Box). I tried B&H but my order was rejected by their system because of this.

I use Adorama about every second month because they are the only reputable store I found that ship to a PO Box.

After about 6 orders I can comment on the following:
  • If you buy many items there will be a chance that one of the items is not in store. This will likely delay the full order for at least a week until they decide to ship things seperatly. I ordered things 3 weeks ago with the expensive FedEx express delivery and it has not left yet.
  • The only problem I had was when I bought a camera. Some guy wanted to talk me into buying protectives filters and other things I did not need.
  • I always got billed only for the items shipped and received everything in good conditions.
They could really improve the speed and update the customer on a regular basis but they succeded with the most important part: sending me what I wanted for the price advertised.
