Hi,

I'm planning to buy a better DC with budget around US$600, and expect
it can deliver sharp image and more functions.
People tell me Nikon 885 is the choice.
Can you, using 885 or not, suggest a model suitable for me??

Many Thks,

Alan

It depends on what you want to do with the camera. If you want to use the camera for macro shots, landscapes, etc., this is a great camera. If you want a camera that takes great outdoor shots of people, or indoor flash shots forget it.

I bought the Nikon 885 and sent it back. The pictures that I took without people in it looked good, but skin tones in my people shots were on the red side, and not just red but were blotchy. I don't want to have to adjust each picture in PhotoShop. Also, it did not work well on automatic setting. Scene modes are OK, but if you want to take a candid shot, are you really going to fiddle around with the menu? And, the battery charger is on backorder, so you are going to have to buy expensive disposable lithium batteries at about $10 US each, and they last only about 30-40 shots.

I then had to decide about what I really wanted in a digital camera. I wanted: 1) a small camera that I could carry easily, 2) works really well on automatic setting, with some manual settings available, 3) probably would never print out larger than 8 x 10", 4) pictures are perfect right out of the camera; no adjustments needed, 5) easily accessible white balance button on the camera, 6) rechargeable lithium battery that lasted, 7) lag times had to be really quick (grandchildren usually don't stand still too long), 8) easy to download images to computer.

I decided to buy the Canon S300 (PowerShot S300 Digital Elph, or IXUS 300). I love it, the pictures are perfect and I carry it everywhere. The colors are right on. It also comes with a battery and recharger. I plan on buying an extra battery, but for now, I just put the battery in the charger whenever I have taken a few pictures and keeps the battery full.

I think you can get a CP995 for that price. I'd go for that one.
(I have an CP880 now and am looking for upgrade to 995 myself)

Hi Alan,

I have to agree with Helen as far as the picture quality on the 885. I purchased two of them for gifts three weeks ago and returned both of them because quality was not acceptable for a Nikon. I've been using Nikon digitals for almost two years and assumed the 885 would be a good camera. I was extremely disappointed. One camera had 29 pics taken, the other had 11 taken. Almost all the pictures were of people and the skin tones were horrible. Reddish colors and very blotchy. The indoor flash pics were horrible too. A lot of noise in the shadow areas.

Another thing I was disappointed with, is there was no rechargeable battery and charger included with the 885. At that time, that would have been $100 more. Since then, I believe Nikon has a special price on the two items for $50? Anyway, that's getting very close to the CP995, which is a great camera!!

I decided on two Canon A20's for the gifts and I couldn't be more happy with the picture quality. Seems the A20 is easier to learn and use too. I got the A20's for less than $400 each, which was $150 less than the Nikons.
Good luck with your camera search....

Hi Helen,
For what it's worth; I have a good friend that purchased the S300. It's
a great camera and he loves it too.

He sent me a set of shots from a cruise. The were nice, but they got
a whole lot better after I removed the muddy cast and toned down
the contrast a bit. I don't think any digicam produces "correct" color
right out of the chute. It's all just data.

Have fun,

Jim

Hey Alan,

I'm not sure why people complain as much as they do about a particular camera except that they just like to complain. Everybody has a different perspective about a particular camera. Here is mine: My 885 shoots skin tones nicely. If you are in a room at night with one 60w bulb over head, then don't expect any camera to do the job. The reds do tend to be a little over saturated. It's just not that big an issue. Don't expect the camera to cook your dinner either. Buy what you like! If you read enough personal comments about any camera long enough you will not buy anything. People expect the cheapest camera with the highest resolution in the smallest body with the biggest and fastest zoom available. And it must come from Nikon. Get my point? Go to a store. Play with the camera. Buy it if you like. My 885 shoots fine. I enjoy it.

Well you are going to get conflicting views Alan, but never mind. If you think about it, the ones that assumed, returned their 885s but the ones that tried it out, loved theirs. For what it's worth the pics I took with it briefly looked very nice and the s300 comparison should not be taken too seriously, it's a different type of DC to the 885. I say the people are right,

but if you can stretch to a 995 and like it's shape and form, then that's the one to get for best quality and better zoom power.
