I have ordered from B & H online and been very happy. I might visit their NYC store. Is it in a "good" neighborhood? Can I get back from the store to their parking lot without getting mugged?

They are pretty much in the center of Manhattan, safe place. They however do not have a parking lot (at least I haven't seen one) and finding a spot for your car could be a real issue...

Cheers,

Alexei

Supposedly they have a little spot across the street for 1 hour if you spend $100 or 2 hours if you spend $300. Gonna try that. Otherwise, I'll find the nearest garage (and spend $15-$20).

Hey Randy - It is in a safe part of town, no worries.

Actually, although I love B&H, I wish it were in a better location (way too far on the west part of the city for my liking).

I've been to NY a mess of times (my favorite place in the world!), and only drove in once. In my opinion, it's not worth driving, you can spend hours in traffic. Take a train in and use public transit or walk to where you want to go. I've taken Amtrak in all but that one time and it's just more pleasant. If I remeber correctly (and I could be wrong) B&H isn't too far from Grand Central.

You'll love the palce it's a like a candy store for camera nuts.

put a horrible image out to the world of this grand city.

i grew up in shadier areas in the city but like any other place in the world, if you are smart about your surroundings, you will do just fine.
...which is completely wrong, but old prejudices die hard.

public transportation works quite well though (pending the current potential strike of course).

B&H is pretty close to 34th St Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

One can go anywhere around there and be as safe as in your home town.

Taking a cab is good advice. I normally take the train for most of the trip, but take a cab the last couple of blocks to the destination, then take a cab back to the train.

B & H is located on 9th Ave. between 34th & 35th Streets. It has a small parking lot on 34th St., and on Sundays, the overflow goes into their receiving area on 35th Street. As one poster pointed out, they're closed Friday night & all day Saturday.

Its in a very busy, safe area, as stated, near Penn Station, Madison Square Garden and the Javits Convention Center, in which you should have no trouble (unless you're waving around $20 bills in the air-then I might roll you).

Right now, the situation in New York is a bit dicey with a threatened transit strike. You could get into Penn Station from Long Island or NJ by train or in to Port Authority Bus Terminal (40th St & 8th Ave.) and then walk over there. If you're going this coming week, that's probably not a bad idea anyway. Especially, if there is a strike, NYC is the last place you want to be in a car; can you say GRIDLOCK? In fact, they may not even let you into that part of the city.

After all is said and done, it is worth it to go there. If there is anything for the photographer, they pretty much have it, and the setup is just amazing.

Have fun

I come from CT, at best with light traffic I can get to B&H in about 45 Min to an hour..

My tip DONT take the GWB!

I take the Hutch, I forgot the other roads, but it brings you to lower Mantattan, turn up the street were the Jacob Javits Center is. Keep going up stright for like 5 blocks, and you will see B&H on the right, and the parking lot is on the left.

I really don't know how being "smart" about your surroundings will help much. I live outside Atlanta (never go downtown anymore) and recently retired, a 28 year career as a Federal Agent working out of the Atlanta Federal Center, so I have first hand experience. Haven't you ever read any of the crime stats? (Atlanta and NYC are really close and right up there in the top 10)

"Smart" has nothing to do with it. Luck maybe......

Hi Trackertech - I don't know what the crime stats are but I would have to imagine that if you look at stats based on the total population of NYC, it can't be horrific.

I think that being smart about your surroundings (i.e. paying attention to what's happening around you, your instincts, etc.) is very key anywhere in the world. I went to Spain years ago and could always spot the gypsies before they even came up to me and my wife so I was prepared before any problem came up.

Luck I guess also really applies for all of us in life. Of course you can get mugged anywhere anytime but being weary of your surroundings is important. I grew up in the South Bronx and know this first hand.

B and H is in an enjoyable and safe location. No worse than any mid-town location of any big city. Just use the same precautions and street smarts you would use in any city, and you will be fine

Agree 100% - can't wait to go back in Feb. LOVE NYC!

Take public transit and enjoy the sites, sounds and smells - can't wait to go to B&H this time down...though it might get dangerous to be there, with a credit card in my wallet... ;)
