This is a on going project. I wanted to capture the birds and yet use a slow enough speed to give the water lots of movement. The is shot at 1/2 sec. I have gone back to this same place several times to attempt this. Of course the ducks don't show..or..they move to much etc. Also if the sun is to bright coming thru the trees the light blows out. Anyhow am getting closer to where I want to be.

There is a SB-600 flash used of camera near the ducks which helped light them. If you can help with some suggesstions as to how to accomplish this..they would be most welcome.
Thanks David

great shot and great composition!

your closer than you think.

David,

It would be much easier if the ducks were in the foreground and the falls in the background so that you could illuminate them and have the flash fade and not effect your show shutter exposure for the background falls. You might want to try closer to sunrise or sunset so that the falls might be shaded more if there in a valley.

For you comments. I really appreciate you taking the time..to have and post your thoughts . You all have a great xmas..and happy New Year.
All the best.
Cheers David

Thanks for your reply. I wish that all could happen as well. But..the morning and evening light is NON existent. It is as dark as a tomb at that time! And its colder so the birds of any kind don't want to come there..they love the warmth of the sun as you well know. I have stopped by and checked at diferent times...this is the best I can do for now. I am going to keep working on it..its a very nice setting..if I can pull it off.
All the best Morris..thanks for your thoughts as always

David, I like this picture a lot - and I also think the whole idea is a very creative one. I can imagine all sorts of variations, including going at a dark(er) time of day so that the contribution from the off-camera flash is greater.

I believe you have achieved what you set out to accomplish but if you want another approach, I might suggest a layered blend: one layer just the water and another the water plus the ducks then reveal the ducks with a mask etc.

I've been moaning about what I can't do with my newly-acquired SB800 lately but I also love what I can do and one of the things I want to try out is remote flash and animal pictures.

Make friends with the ducks - it's good to have cooperative subjects.

Thought of the layering. But..between each shot..even for a fraction of a second...the pics are different. I could..and have taken a..waterall..that is what I want. But..then I have to ake a perfect duck photo..and layer it on top. David I will take this photo..I hope..finally nailing it. I have time..and patience. Thanks David for your response..its always welcome and informed.
If you celabrate it..merry Xmans.. lets take LOTS of photos in the New Year
al the best..David
