Hmm... what are the benefits?
Zoom range - check
2.8 aperture - check
IS - check
L color and contrast - check.
Looks like it certainly will :-)

Of course, the 5D will be even sharper, and 1D MkII will focus better, but that's down to the difference between the cameras, not the way they use a particular lens.

by the term full benifits?...You may want to learn about the 1.6 crop factor your camera has (do a search) if you don't understand that.

Most people conclude any 2X converter will bring unwanted distortions to images...the use of converters involves tradeoffs.

Thank You for the wisdom... I have never used a converter before I will take a look.

Two things:

GET THE IMAGE-STABILIZED VERSION of this lens. You will find ten times more uses for it (tele zoom indoors in low light!) and the extra $$ will seem like the best you ever spent.

Also, neither version will thrill you optically with more than a 1.4x TC. The non-IS version is marginally better.

If you want a 200mm focal length that you can use with a TC, get a 200/2.8L. Very nice and not too expensive.

I was thinking also instead of a 2xTC maybe a 300mm f2.8 L or a 400mm f2.8 L, but they are very expensive..

And the lens is not going anywhere, so when you upgrade, the lens will be ready for that as well.

Go for it!

Do get the IS version.

Out of curiosity, what are you planning to use this lens / these lenses for?

not the full benefit if by that you mean precision AF found on 20D 5D and 1D series cameras.

350D does not take advantage of the f2.8 precision autofocus b/c it does not have it.

If you are thinking of getting a 2X TC, I'm guessing you are into birding? 2X TC greatly degrade image quality but acceptable.

If you can afford it, the 300 f2.8 plus 1.4 TC would be ideal. And 2X TC when needed. This is my next dream purchase in the super tele range.

Another alternative would be 400 f5.6 (no IS) and get a non-Canon 1.4TC

if I made sense, I'm sorry

Taking portraits and sports. More landscape portraits with my kids and wife. I am looking for somethign that will allow me to stick them i na middle of a hay field 100 or 200 yds away and get a good sharp photo of them and the the hay around them but blury in the back ground and in front. Plus sevral other shots that are in my mind. I do alot of hiking so I take pictures of birds animals liek bears and such... I liek telephotos in this case.. I am sure you understand why...

yeah right? i want it under my christmas tree too... that said, it might behoove you to hang on to your money for a bit b/c 20D is probably up for replacement.

bigger... better... more features....

when will it ever end? ;)

I'm leaning towards the 20D over the 350D anyway, but I'm curious to hear how much difference the 20D really makes for focusing with f/2.8 lenses. Is it very noticeable? I would be using "prosumer" lenses for the next few years, not "L" lenses. I have the 50 1.8, might get other non-L primes, might get Tamron 28-75 or Sigma 18-50 or 24-70, things on that level. Thanks.

Please look over this article... it explains f2.8 precision autofocus at length.

That said, I own a RebelXT/350D, and am perfectly satisfied with its focus most of the time. And the other times... who knows? Maybe its my own poor camera work.

I have not noticed much difference in how precise the AF is with 2.8 lenses on the 20D and 300D.

No crop camera uses the full benefits of any full frame lens.

The 350D uses only part of the lens, meaning that in order to get good images the center part of the lens must be better than when used on a full frame camera. On the other hand, on a full frame camera the corners may be worse.

On the other hand, there are no high quality long lenses made specifically for a 1.6 crop camera, so my comment applies to all long lenses. They are all full frame so the 350D cannot use the full benefits of any of them.
