Price Drop for D200?

I've heard from two separate dealers that the dealer cost is $1480. They won't lower their price so much as to not make a profit.

It's likely that Nikon has already dropped the planned price about $300 to $1699 in order to make the Canon 5D look more overpriced. My guess is that there is a greater chance that the waiting lists for the D200 will be just clearing within six months than for Nikon to be having a fire sale on a camera that they're selling all they can manufacture.

Instead, look for Nikon to try and sell you up by offering a rebate when you buy your D200 with a couple lenses. That way, Nikon gets more of your money, and additional profit, and you get cool gear at a reduced price.

The only way the D200 will be sold at a reduced price in six months is if Canon introduces a better camera than the D200 for $1499. Just my opinion.

Does anyone exspect the price of the D200 to drop significantly
within the next 6 months? Say around $1,200.00 by July 2006?

Thanks

so much for the 10% at 6 mo theory.....Look for about a $200.00 to $400.00 drop when pre-orders are filled....

That is not the only guide. Nikon did not drop the price of the D100 in response to the Digital Rebel. Instead Nikon created a stripped down D100, aka the D70. For the D200 to drop in price, look for a companion, stripped down model with a plastic body, no GPS, no vertical grip and a pentamirror, among others. Anyone want a D180 with a pentamirror?
Wow, harsh words!

Given that D70(s) prices seem to have remained pretty stable for
two years, it seems very unlikely to me that the D200's price will
drop much within a shorter time span.

Of course, all that could change if Canon releases an impressive
30D in February, or if the real reviews of the D200 are less
glowing than the previews.

But I doubt it. That's why I went ahead and preordered a D200 at
full list price. Seems fairly safe.

The only price drop you'll see on the D200 is on eBay, where the gougers selling units for $2100 will have to wake up and smell the eggnog after Christmas and drop their prices to $1,899, then $1696, then $1569 (gray market, no battery).

I imagine Nikon will do some rebates, perhaps around Christmas next year, with a grip and the camera going for $50 off.

All depends what Canon pulls out of the closet next.

Welcome to digital. It sounds as if you might be making a trip in July :-)

The digital world is moving at such speed that the only time
a camera maker and/or dealers can charge full price for a model
is in the first 6 months, or so.

After that time, the competition has either caught up or offered a more
attractive alternative, at which time, the price wavers a bit.

If you are just jumping into a DSLR, I would recommend that you take
a serious look at Nikon's D50. It is a more basic camera but has plenty
of technical pizzazz to keep your interest, plus any lenses you buy for it
will also be compatible for the D200, when you buy it in 2007/2008,
after the price sinks a bit . . .

The D50 is compact, takes beautiful pictures and the price may slip
slightly in the next few months. There is a big photo trade show in
February, at which new-camera announcements are traditionally made,
causing ripples in the marketplace as everyone watches everyone else's
product.

Good luck !
Keith
