is he a relic

Dave . . I can't answer for him obviously, but for me, front to back depth is not close with digital. Color 'depth' as well. When I go to certain photo sites that enjoy . . . those that have thumbnails for photos, I can see the difference in a well shot MF image over digital. I never post my MF as I only have a 35mm scanner. I have made tests myself, and for my 'likes' it's not close. Obviously we all have our likes and dislikes.
Please quantify what this difference you think you see actually is.
As it can't be resolution or color accuracy.....what is it?

Nobody can make the statement that the use of primes makes one a pro while the use of zoom relegates one to amateur status.

Primes are tools, zooms are tools.

I am a pro and I use both. BTW, my Tamron 28-75 XR Di is as sharp as any prime I have seen on a 1Ds MkII. Of course, I have not yet seen, firsthand, the Zeiss Distagon. I just cannot imagine my XR Di being any sharper than it is.

The differences in format will make a huge difference in the final print. It sounds to me like we are talking about medium vs 35 or digital slr. As far as optics zeiss cant be beat. Or the photographer was just probably better.

Do you really consider the Tamron 28-75 XR Di to be a pro quality lens? I don't mean to be condescending, but I owned this lens and yes it was sharp, but the color cast sucked and the build quality was such that I doubt the sample I had would last a year of hard professional use. Pros do use zooms in fact I would venture to say that most pros use zooms, but if I fed my family by taking pictures and my livelihood depended on my equipment there is no way I would I would use this lens. Heck I don't make a living from photography and I sold it.

had an engagement session the other day where I shot around 200 shots and all but some 25 were taken with my trusty 50mm f:1.8 Nikon on my D70. The others were taken with a 28-70mm F:2.8. I had other lens but chose them

When my wife and I have out tenth anniversary I am
going to hire the dude with the Hasselblads and primes!
Don't forget, it's the carpenter, not the hammer.

This prime vs zoom thing has been around long before digital, a tool is a tool.
