My brother-in-law recently passed away, and my sister wanted a couple of old photographs printed as 5x7.

I need help getting rid of an annoying shadow on one, and help getting rid of a yellow color cast on the other.

I will post the two photos in the next post (assuming I can remember how to do it correctly.)

Layer> new> select screen from drop down menu at 50% opacity. Use a brush at 30%opacity and flow. Select the skin color below the shadow, and paint over the shadow 'til it disappears. Added a curves adj layer. gc
This photo has an obvious shadow just below his eyes. Can someone

Kay,

If you send me an email, I'll send you a finished image sized to 5X7 and a screen shot of the work flow.

I have downloaded the picture, so you can delete it whenever you need. Thanks again.

I used a different method of taking out the shadow. I created a blank layer changed to luminosity mode. Sampled the skin just below the shadow area and painted the shadow out in about 30% increments with a very soft brush until it looked right.

I also added a touch of contrast with a curve, also in luminosity mode.

I'm tinkering with the 2nd one but can't get both the skin tone and the jacket to look the way I think they should.

Very nice job Ed. In understanding your technique, I have a question about painting on a blank layer changed to luminosity mode. Since you are in luminosity mode, does it matter if you sample the skin color just below the shadow area for the brush or not? Isn't the color irrelevant? Would a soft white brush at a similar opacity work just as well?

Hi John,

The reason I sampled just below the shadow wasn't because of the color. It was because I wanted to match the luminosity just below the shadow. Actually sort of fade the shadow to that point.

A brush of any color at a similar opacity would work as well but by sampling where I did I was guaranteed a match.

OK, thanks for the explanation - that's what I expected. Your technique certainly worked well. It does seem that you don't really need a very close match with your brush since you were painting multiple strokes at a partial opacity. You're going to be building it up slowly until it looks right anyway so anything in the ballpark would work. Thanks for explaining.

I was curious about this because there are so many ways to tweak something like this (a masked curve in luminosity blend mode, painting low opacity white on a gray layer set to overlay blend mode, a color painting on a dodge layer, etc...). I just hadn't seen anyone use a blank layer in luminosity mode that you then paint on. That's a new one, but I see why it would work.

I found that Color replacement on the beard and a bit less saturation had the best result. At least better than just levels &, color balance
