I have recent switched from Nikon to Canon. I have a 1D Mark II N and a 20D now but I am wondering which Canon camera is the quietest. I also use the Olympus E-1. One of the major reasons I use the Olympus is because it is so quiet.

I shoot a lot of stage performances and need a quiet camera for that work. So my question is what digital Canon camera is the quietest. I would be interested in any of the older Canon SLRs if it was really quiet. I have heard that the 5D is not as loud as the others. Is that true?

Maybe this should be the subject so you can read it.

perhaps not what you wanted to hear, but it is quiet. However, I certainly don't consider either the 1Ds2 or 5D to be particularly loud. They don't seem louder than my old S2 or D70 or the D2X I tried. I haven't used a 1D2 or 20D, the latter has a reputation for having a shutter like a shotgun!!!

cheers

The Rebel/Rebel XT and D60 are awfully quiet. The 10D and 20D are almost as quiet. The 5D has a larger mirror and is significantly louder.

I have a hard time imagining someone calling a 1-series camera "quiet." Not with a straight face.

OOh, I know!!! The Broken one!!

Seriously, I hear the 5D is quieter than 1 series cameras.

What you might want to consider - but probably don't want to hear ;) is that you might want to look at the high end point and shoots that will do higher ISO's but don't have a mirror - that will be your quietest with regard to a stage performance. I am not sure of all of the "prosumer" P&S cameras, but I know the fuji S9000 can go ISO 1600, and there may be a few other options.

But, if I were working in a performance where silence was a necessity, I'd either look into getting some sort of sound dampening device to put the camera in (I think they use something like that for photographers on film sets), or a non-mechanical operating camera like a a high level P&S so it would generate no sound to not disturb the performance.

I heard the opposite - that the 20D is louder than the 5D?

Dont you belive me?

Just tested in a shop today. The SLR 350D is significant quieter than the new point and shoot Sony R1 with a artificial shutter sound.

I've owned the D30, 10D, the 20D, 1D, 1D Mark II and the 5D, and in my opinion, the 5D is the most quiet, followed closely by the 10D.

I have been fighting this battle for a while now. The E-1 is the quietest DSLR that I know of and I have pretty much a complete system including their F2 lenses. The E-1 is actually not a lot louder than the Leica M6 I had. It's quite expensive to maintain two camera systems though and the high ISO capabilities are much better with Canon.

The 20D is probably the loudest DSLR camera I have every used other than the D2H. I don't think the Mark II is as loud. I was just wondering if any of the lesser bodies were any quieter. I want to be able to use my Canon equipment at some of these performances and need to find a way without being too annoying. Does anyone know of any company that makes something to muzzle the sound. I have found this http://robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-4540-4593
Has anyone used one of these?

Excuse me? How can you even place the 10D and the 20D in the same class?
The 10D is whisper quiet but the 20D make people turn their heads.

I wish that Phil would have provided the shutter sound test on the 5D that he has on some other bodies. There is not a camera store close by that I can try one out. The store I deal with is 2 1/2 hours away and I usually just order by phone. In the past, I have used the Olympus E-1 and a Nikon D70 which was pretty quiet. I am just looking for something as quiet in Canon.

The Rebel XT is the quietest you can get new. The 10D was also very quiet, but you'd have to buy one used.

I never owned the 5D, but there are numerous reports that it is as quiet or even more than the very discreet 10D.

Actually I haven't owned a 20D - just watched a friend shoot with one. OTOH I have owned or do still own a D60, 300D, 10D, 5D, and 1D. I didn't notice the 20D being that loud.

The 5D's mirror makes a substantial sound as does the shutter ****, but it's not the CLACK of a 1-series for sure. The 5D seems to be about as quiet as that type of camera could easily be. Reminds me of my (ollllld) T70.

350D - makes a "zip" sound, quiet electronical. Not very loud.

10D - mine is like velvet on velvet so silent it is. The one I used at the newspaper I worked at was a lot louder.

20D - Noisy whip, if you know what I mean.

1D Mark II - a machine gun like. I would stay away from this if I wanted silent

I suppose the 5D is very quiet. Look after it.

My experiences:
10D - the quitest of all Canon DSLRs
D30 (D60) - 2nd quitest

5D - Has a deeper clunk which is not disturbing at a distance (sounds pretty heavy when holding it closely though)

  • 20D - noisy pitch
