Is this a fun idea for STF?

I think the joy of digital cameras is the image. Not the technology. I think that within STF we have a fantastic resource of people from the expert to the beginner. We are joined by our love of photography and our use of or interest in Sony cameras.

Here's the idea.

Each Wednesday (time to think about it for the weekend) we announce a subject idea. Let's say, our pets. Over the next week any member who's interested will take pictures of their pets and publish one ot two on the thread.

All I'd suggest is that :

1) The pictures are taken that week - not from your archives

2) You post your camera details with the picture and any tips on how you took it and edited the shot on your PC.

3) No prizes - it's for the fun of taking pictures.

4) Constructive comments are welcome.

50 Posts are limited to 1 or 2 shots, not whole galleries or the entire contents of 128mb memory sticks :-)

I like this idea because it encourages us to talk about how we're using our cameras. It will act as a resource for me and everyone else as we look at each others shots and comments. It will also show what wonderful pictures these cameras can take - all of them :-). It could be fun.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the idea in general and how to improve it so that members would get maximum enjoyment.

Cheers

A delightful idea. Gives us a mission. Something interesting to challenge us. And a way to learn new things. Count me in as well.

Hi Robert,

Kind of this is done ever and ever again in 'samples and galeeries'. The forum in which it belongs. As there isn't a special thing about pets photographed by Sony cameras and ther isn't a special thing about pets photographs made with brand x, y, or ....

This happens all the time in STF. Search for "challenge" or "show me your"...

Hi Jacques,

I don't think that was his point, though. Other forums often times will have a monthly challenge for a specific camera. This gives the end-users an opportunity to share and to learn techniques that they may have never picked up otherwise. I think this is a great idea, Robert, and look forward to joining in down the road.

too bad the samples and galleries forum really isn't as open a place to post pictures as it was intended. the same people consistently post- likeminded individuals with similar tastes. and they tend to respond to pictures posted by one another, while letting quality work slip through the cracks.

i would like to see photos posted by STF members, i've read their opinions and would like to see their work. we all have something in common here, whether it be the fact that we own Sony digicams, or just our attitudes... afterall, we did all buy 'uncool' Sony cameras...

i don't think there is anything wrong with posting the occasional pic here...

I was thinking something similar, but my first idea was this:

your assignment, if you choose to take it is to take a picture (take more, post one) AT least 1 mile from your house, but not more than 2. Subject of your choice, but something you might not normally take a shot of.

So, i'm in - just don't do pets first as at the moment we are pet-less .

I know that for me, i tend to think there is nothing to take pics of, but im sure if i looked in that mile radius i'd find something.... i hope....

Robert:

I think this is a good idea. We are often, as Eugene says, posting a "Challenge" or "Show me your..." on an impulse basis. Usually spurred when a member takes a pic that moves him.

I kinda like the idea of formalizing it. I like the idea of having it here in the forum (although I'm not sure what Phil might think. He has urged us to keep pics to a minimum in the talk forums.) I think that the S&G forum scrolls too fast. Oh, and I think one pic is enough.

My only reservation is how are we going to choose the subject?

What if we rotate amongst the contributors ? The poster of the most interesting pic of the week, by consensus, could be given the privelege of choosing the next subject ? We used to that in a camera club in the early 70's.Remember it as being a lot of fun.
Might work...or some such....Whatever. Anyway, I'm in !!

Hi PryorJohn,

Yes I too think this forum is the best place to show how we captured the missbehavings of our Sonies ( well I don't have a thing to complain about, but just as a way of speaking).

But for discussing photographs, well we should be on one forum, what camera we do use, as the camera doesn't realy have so much to say for the quality of the photographs we are making/taking.

Sounds fun, and I'm also without camera until mine shows up.

Yikes

I thought it would be fun. This is great.

Here are some observations

1) Pets was an example - we won't do pets yet

2) What say you to me suggesting the first topic. I loved the idea of the person who by consensus posted the best picture getting to chose the next topic. If there's no consensus the previous person who suggested can pass the baton - so to speak

3) The reason i did this here was that i think we have a little community. It's sort of different to the general forums.

4) One post per person. let's respect Phil's servers. My company is spending a load this month on servers so I get the point.

I'll let the post run for a few more days before announcing the first challenge on Tuesday / Wednesday.

Last comment - my hope is this inspires, encourages and helps people to take great photos. I'm excited to see what people do - and then learn from it. Above all I hope we all respect each other. Not every picture will be a masterpiece, least of all mine. Many will be personal. Let's just enjoy it and be constructive. OK :-)

Thanks Rob

Hi Cubfan,

The samples and galleries forum realy is a very, very open forum. I would like to write I never ever have met a bunch of people being so open and honnest to newcomers.

The forum most certainly has more contributers than a year ago. And yes, as no one seems to like to write comments as 'I don't ike it', but well I know there are quite a few, willing to comment on new posters. I'm 'stupid' enough for always looking at postings without a comment.

It realy isn't a club/bunch of people just willing to react on only other

'members' postings. And well it's a club of people reacting more easily on each others postings.

Just try, or retry, we are all just amatures, but far more better than the Pros.
