I spoke to Ritz this morning about the D200 order I placed 11/2. They told me that the cameras are not due to arrive until 12/22. They said they would be receiving enough in the first batch to fill all the orders received through noon today. The second batch wouldn't be available until January. Just to be sure, I called back three times and spoke with a different person each time. They all gave me the same answer.

If you blend all the current rumors, this sounds plausable. However, I'm sure all of this is firmly etched in jello.

the point.....
no one knows
but my ritz says....
ritz.com pre-orders will be out for delivery on 12/15
the preorders from their stores will go out after

then....... and only then, will there be cameras in the stores to touch and purchase

Our Xmas holidays start on 12/23. If I don't get the camera before it, I may cancel the order (or sell it on eBay) and wait for the price to come down. I hope Nikon USA doesn't delay D200 delivery like in Canada.

If you're not sure about the camera, maybe you should cancel it now?

You have no idea how long it will be before the price drops. It could be 5 moths, it could be a year.

Just talked online with ritzcamera.com. They had earlier given me a ship date of 12/15. They now say "The Nikon D200 is expected during the last week of this month. "

Ritz: The Nikon D00 is expected during the last week of this month.
Ritz: We will ship it to you once we receive the shipment from the manufacturer.
me: so date has slipped from the earlier estimate of 12/15?
Ritz: Yes, the expected ship date is the date given to us by the manufacturer.
Ritz: We do not have any control over this.
Ritz: We totally depend on the manufacturer for the shipping date.

me: I know you have no control. I just wanted to be sure I understood the current estimate. Thank you for your help.

Everyone's different.

Whether the camera comes before or after Christmas is of no concern to me. I'll be a bit miffed if it doesn't come before mid-January for use on a trip I am taking. Even if it doesn't come then, I won't cancel my order.

I'm as sure as one can be without personally using one. I never doubt that it'll be a better camera and gives me more power in photography (just the bigger VF is a big help) than D70. It's merely a decision between $$$ and time of upgrade. If I don't get one before X'mas. I might not mind waiting a bit longer (3 months max maybe) in order to save a couple hundreds.

You're more optimistic than me: I wouldn't dream that the D200 price goes down by $200 in the first 3 months, even if the Canon 20D's successor is announced this February (which may not happen).

this camera isn't coming down in price for at least 6 months
you might not mind waiting/as most of us will be waiting
but....
don't wait for the price to drop any time soon

It's probably not a choice of nikon - simple supply and demand, there is probably just not enough supply to meet the demand. Similar thing happened with xbox and xbox360 - huge demand, more then supply in many areas - didn't hurt microsoft in the long run. By now people should understand that only so many of a given product can be made in a given amount of time and maintain quality.

I'd rather wait until Jan and get a camera I have confidence in then get a rushed one that I will have to send in 3 times before it works as it should.

Never say never. Canon's 5D was released what, 2 months ago? And I've seen posts about price drops in the realm of $200, and rebates bringing the price down another $200 - price drops can and do happen after the initial surge.

Unfortunately for me, I have to wait for my D200 until next year when I have some money again.

I don't have any marketing data to back my opinion up, but I don't think it's as big a deal as you do that the cameras don't make it by Christmas. Sure, it would be nice for a lot of people, but it doesn't mean they are going to cancel their orders, or purchase another brand. It's not as if their current equipment will quit producing images when the calendar changes to December 25th..

Lynette S:

I would like to inform that the Nikon D200 Camera is expected to be shipped from our warehouse by the end of December.
cliff:
I had thought you would be shipping around 15 Dec 2005, has that changed?
Lynette S:

Yes, as per the manufactuerer's latest update the Nikon D200 Camera is expected to be shipped from our warehouse by the end of December.
cliff:
Has the camera been delayed?
Lynette S:
Yes, it has been delayed.

Sorry for the Bad News...

...than the countless other Ritz responses? Ships this week, ships next week, ships Jan, etc. They're so clearly not on the same page I'm not putting any stock in what comes out of Ritz until I get the shipping notification.

Rob

I've called Ritz probably once a week. They've never told me anything but this. Actually nothing more specific than "ships middle of this month".

Rob

Just for a grin, I just called Ritz about 5 minutes ago, and was told I would have it by the 19th. All this tells me is they know about as much as we do, and it'll be here when it gets here. Too many oddball dates.

I've waited this long, and I can wait some more. I will be pi* ed if I don't see it by Christmas, but folks, we're at their mercy.

I just hate it when things get so heated around here. It's not worth it.

Just my opinion, I've been wrong before!!!

What I really hate is how so many people always feel compelled when asked a question that they don't know they answer to make something up. There is nothing wrong with saying "I don't know". Why can 't they just admit they don't know when it will ship instead of feed disinformation. They don't gain anything by this.

Very true. Nikon always manages to shoot itself in the foot somehow. Same with the D2x. While not a big stocking stuffer, Nikon shortened the useful shelf-life of the D2x by quite a bit by delaying the camera for 4 months (assuming a two-year useful shelf life, that's almost 20%).
