Torture test production D200 high ISO

On the site of the swedish magazine Kamera&Bild they test high ISOs
of the D200 under though real life conditions - a game of girls
handball in a dimly lit indoor arena. Overall they are very pleased
with the noise and AF-performance. Sample photos shot at ISO 2500
and 3200. Jpegs with NR set to normal.

Spalding12 i think one of the main reasons why you're not seeing any production cameras here in the US is because the US tends to have very tough non-disclosure agreements and they sue the pants off people.

Whereas in other parts of the world, its not such a big deal. As a matter of fact, I have like close to a hundred D200 pictures shot at various ISO and quite an extensive test done by some people in korea that have had the camera for a week now.

and also, people in the US will gobble up this camera anyways. Its actually not a bad strategy... get the americans hungry for what the rest of the world has already got to play around with for a bit, and then unleash the product and have their pent up envy buy all the units :)
my point is if they have had a production camera for days.....
then why aren't there any in the states?
i NEVER said that the US was more important, but.... certainly
NIKON stands to sell plenty in the US
so..... why no production camera here
please don't put words into my mouth
you have to admit that it seems kind of weird

From Popular Photography January 2006 issue:

"After handling one of the very first
D200s off the assembly line (serial number
0000002), we think it is. Unfortunately, our
D200 still had a few fi rmware revisions to
go before we could run it through the POP
PHOTO lab test gauntlet."

so you have a least one in the US.

Nha, you were not too harsh. You were spot on Evan.
The guy that you think said something insulting, he pretty much did it, indeed.

What ever he tried then of recovering, does change what he said and it was esactly what you understood at first thought.
do not worry.
I am sorry if I was too harsh or misunderstood in my post.

Yes it was meant to be ironic.

I don't think it is reasonable for us to automatically assume that
just because other parts of the world (like Japan or Europe) have
access to a few production D200's & those of us in North America
don't, that these must be suspicious or unbelievable reports.

It may hard to accept, but North America is not necessarily the
centre of the civilized world.

Evan:

By re-reading your post and knowing you used some irony, I understand it now. And love the way you said it. Sorry to be slow in this case.

Oh yes, the center of the universe is the U.S. How dare to believe otherwise !!! ;-)

(Suggestion: next time you post such a post with irony, it would be helpful to use an emoticon such as this: ;-) Then your post would be understood a bit better. In any case, thank you for the clarification).
Yes, I know that some of the testing was performed in Argentina as
originally reported. there were many who scoffed at this thought
because it wasn't in North America then either.

I was trying to be facetious. Perhaps I should refrain from such
posting in the future.

... is that the US dollar has been weak now for over three years. The camera manufacturers sell their products at a considerably higher price in Europe (and I am convinced a higher profit). It may not be all that interesting to try to fight for market share at any price in a tough US market.

Evan:

You said: centre ? You must not be in North America. Unless you are living in the U.S. and still sticking to the pure English word, you must be in Great Britain or Australia. Here we say: center.

And yes, the US is not the center of the universe, I agree. But it is hard to convince my fellow Americans otherwise. For one thing, here we have tournaments called the World Series (baseball) where only American teams participate.

Actually Gus, I live South of the 49th Parallel but in Canada...Victoria BC, on Vancouver Island...We do have a few fond leftovers from the British Empire...little things like spelling conventions; colour, centre, traveller to name a few.

We too, occasionally, forget that the world is bigger than our little corner would suggest.

This is not 'higher' ISO performance. The D200 is rated to ISO 1600. These are the results of a torture test - out of range ISO values pushed by one or two stops, so we are effectively looking at results somewhere in the range of ISO 5000 - 12800. The images may not be perfect but this is pushing any camera to its extremes and to be honest I think they are still quite useful.
If this is true of higher ISO performance, I need to rethink my
options.
I do a lot of low light work, the D200 would not be a good choice
for this.

MY pre-order is on the first shipment.

I'm a low light photographer myself but I think they've pushed the envelope too far. I'm satisfied with a good ISO 1600 performance with

1) a little film-like noise and still good sharpness and
2) pretty grainy ISO 3200 with still good sharpness.

While I'm not sure whether the D200 offers what I need this test is pretty crazy.

I read one time that top of management of Nikon really really hates the US, and that it is the reason that there are no models for testing anywhere in the US, there are even D200 models for testing in Cuba, North Korea and Venezuele.

Maybe it is not true, but well people really tell a lot of sh*t nowadays so I thought lets join it seems to be fun.

My local dealer received a D200 Friday for exposisiton and 4 hours ago I was able to take a first look and some shots. Most of them at 1600 and with lots of blackness/darkness. It carried indeed very low noise in these areas.

I am low light photographer too, and guess the the D200 could be the perfect camera for this purpose.

Lots of previously unseen shots, most shot in RAW & converted (downsized but still very interesting).

Let's say Canon doesn't even bother to sell a single 20Da in the U.S.A.,
and their Japanese model are always a little nicer than the US models,
for example the kit lens on their Kiss and the US correspondence 300D.
