I have purchased and tried out both the Microtech Camermate and the Antec Photochute in the past few days and they have both been nothing but headaches. I can sometimes get the software for the Antect to install and it will work one or two times before freezing up when I click on the drive letter or emtting a series of statacco clicks that forces me to reboot and then nothing. Everything shows up OK in Device Manager. I've reinstalled so many times I lost count. With the Microtech adhering to their directions to install from My Computer - CD Rom and then Setup.exe. throws back a cryptic 'missing parameter' message and when I click on the Launch folder the software appears to install but when I reboot it is still looking for that evasive driver. I've tried downloading Win98 drivers from the Microtech site but when I attempt to open the file on my desktop, I get an invalid page fault message. I'm at wits end, does anyone out there have similar experience with either of these readers and the aforementioned problems? I just got an Oly 2020Z and would like to start working with somer of my shots and I'm not about to go the serial port route. My system is brand new and a 600 Mhz Athlon with 128MB RAM and what I assume to be up to datew USB ports. Any help, please?

Suggest you get the OLy readr.
I have had Zero problems with the Olympus Camedia USB reader....

I have to concur. I haven't had a single problem with the Olympus reader. I still need to get a card for my Diamond Rio to see how it works with them. One other pointer I can pass on is to make sure you install the drivers BEFORE connecting the USB device.

I've had some problems with my Olympus USB reader...nothing like the ones described above, but often my 32mb non-olympus card won't appear in the directory, and I have to fiddle around to get it to wake up and display the contents of the card. I've wondered if the same would be true of a 32mb olympus card.

Has anyone tried the Olympus USB reader with a 64mb card???

I have also purchased the Sandisk USB SmartMedia reader. Any comments on this card reader?

I also tried the Microtech and the Olympus card readers, and returned them both because of software incompatibility with my Dell Dimension V400c. Olympus tech support said they would get back to me, Microtech was no help, and I was on the phone with Dell for almost three hours, but the problem (could not shut Windows 98 down normally) persisted. I ended up with a SanDisk Flashpath reader which goes into the A drive. It's not as fast as the USB readers (when they worked) but it's fast enough, costs the same, and is compatible.

If you have a VIA based motherboard, you can solve your problems quickly by geting a non-VIA based PCI to USB board. I have a VIA motherboard and couldn't get a scanner working until I got a PCI to USB card based on the OPTi chipset. Now all it well. The card cost about $25.
