Microsoft RAW Image Thumbnailer 1.1

Is the thumbnail viewer going to come out in a 64bit flavour
anytime soon?

There are no plans at this time to release a 64-bit version of the RAW Viewer.

I figured out the TIFF lockup thing within 3 days and right after
it came out. Haven't had a problem since I told it not to open
tiffs. I do love seeing thumbnails for my RAW files.

Thanks for the feedback FerretSnapper. Glad the tool is useful to you. The workaround is definitely easy, and we did release an updated install version of the 1.0 Viewer sometime ago that left the Canon TIF RAW support unchecked by default so new installs would avoid this. 1.1 will take care of this once and for all.

Hi Mike,

Here is the link to the problem:

http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/nef-windows-xp-sp2.html

For NEF and DNG files, there is no need to render the RAW file for thumbnail display. These files are already TIFF/EP compatible and WinXP's default thumbnail extractor should be able to display them without any problem. However, a bug in the thumbnail extractor has prevented that happening.

I would also like to see the EXIF data extracted from DNG, but I guess this is not going to happen in version 1.1, is that correct?

I see very strange behavior. It will be working fine and then it will crash whenever an image is double? clicked. It goes away on a reboot. Using 1DII .cr2 files.

I appreciate your efforts. Now if you would do a little more technology sharing with Adobe such that their Bridge and Explorer would be equivalent when PS CS2 is installed.

... I stand corrected. Thanks Mike. It appears I have the problem only with 5D files. Still, they are almost as big as the DsII files! Glad the fix is coming... until such time, I am glad hard disk storage is cheap.

Thanks for your various responses on this forum. It's always refreshing to see "official" commentary from someone like yourself... or Mr. Westfal from Canon.

Thanks for the clarification. We appreciate your patience while we're getting the final bits ready to ship.

I also really appreciate your thank you. I love to be here helping people out and gathering information. I've been a dpreview user on a personal level for 4 years now and dig on sharing info. I agree Chuck is a very helpful person as well. :-)

Take care,

Please drop me a line with more detail on the strange behavior. My e-mail address is in my profile. I have yet to come across this issue, but I definitely want to understand any crashing you are seeing. Does this happen in all directories, large and small? Any details you can provide are much appreciated.

As for sharing with Adobe, we definitely work with them on a regular basis to see where we can partner. We've worked with them a great deal on the new codec model in Vista among other industry leading companies. A shell extension when CS2 is installed is an interesting idea indeed, and I appreciate the feedback. Please feel free to ping me anytime with thoughts or ideas.

Thanks,

I actually haven't tried it myself, but I've pinged our devs to check with them. I'll let you know as soon as I hear back, or get a chance to test it myself.

Mike, installed the new version, and I can delete files again. Thank you, how nice.

Read the documentation that came with it in the read me file... I like many of the features, including the ability to add metadata to the Explorer fields for sorting purposes.

Now, why does the Save As function not transfer the EXIF data? Obviously it's easy to do, but why did Microsoft decide not to copy that data? Thanks for your comment.
