Dear Phil,

I want to ask you a favor: please "unban" Iliah Borg and allow him to rejoin the dpreview forums. I’ve sent you a letter to that effect. But you haven’t replied: I suppose that being dpreview’s mentor does not give you the leisure to read and reply to each feedback message you get. Therefore I am posting this message here in the hope that this thread will get your attention.

Iliah, along with his friend Peter Dove (who was also banned and whom you also may consider to “unban”), have created a small company, RawMagick, which sells software to process raw data. I understand that Iliah may have trespassed the rule about not advertising a commercial product in the dpreview forum by mentioning RawMagick’s software in a thread. Consequently you banned him. I am asking you to reverse this decision for the following reasons:

- Iliah’s true intention was to help a fellow photographer (I can state this with certainty because I know his posting history quite well). He suggested his software only because he sincerely thought that this was a good answer to the problem at hand.

- This happened more than a year ago: the rule-breaking has been sanctioned, and you’ve made your point by banning Iliah (and Peter Dove) for a long period of time.

- Iliah was a fantastic contributor to the forum. He is a very experienced photographer who was very eager to share his knowledge with all of us. This cannot be ignored in a final and fair decision. We've learned so much from him that many of us got into the habit of tracking his posts to make sure that we did not miss a bit of the knowledge that he exposed.
- Finally, I am sure that you agree that everybody deserves a second chance.

Iliah and Peter are the kind of persons who help the forums be what they should be about: people who share their passion for photography and help one each other. To better illustrate this, I could think of no better way than to give a * small * compilation of Iliah’s numerous posts, which you'll find at the very end of this message (BTW, a highly recommended reading for those who are new to the forum and have missed Iliah’s posts).

If you want to reach them, Iliah’s e-mail is [email protected]. Peter’s is [email protected]

I am also asking fellow members of the forum to post their support and keep the thread going, in order to increase the chances that this message get Phil Askey’s attention.

Yours sincerely,
Thierry O. F. aka "TOF guy"

Wow, what a waste of good digital space this is.

Why can't someone just get a new screen name? I don't get it. Who cares who Phil is/does/ does not do. This is his forum, get over it and move on.

True.

People must realize that this a forum with the owners/moderators best interests at heart. Nothing wrong with that. But it also means that the public's best interests are not priority no. 1.

So, take what you can and if things are not good anymore, just move on. Nive forums like these are a dime a dozen. I like it here, but it would not be a big deal going somewhere else.

How is digital space wasted?

Ever hear of honesty?

I'm with Steven and Irvin. This is supposed to be a forum for D70 enthusiasts. Content should reflect this. I'm so tired of reading through endless garbage posted here so regularly.

Well, Iliah * is * a D70 enthusiast.
Content should reflect this. I'm so tired of reading

Exactly ! Please read even just a few of Iliah's posts (you'll find links in the first message at the top of the thread). I'm very sure that you'll come to the conclusion that we need more posts like these.

Wally,

Sure I believe in being honest, and there's nothing wrong with expressing one's feelings. I might even believe what the o.p. said, if I cared enough to read it.

This forum however is run by a dictator. His decisions will not be accepted by all, and he address it in the rules section.

1) Please note that this is one of the busiest forums on the Internet, we have little time to debate a ban, if you break a rule you will be banned, no arguments.

2) Question for the webmaster - DO NOT POST "Question for Phil" or "Phil,..." messages, the webmaster doesn't have time to scan through or respond to all the forums.
3) These forums are privately owned and run, they are not public.

So what about just getting a new member name? It seems all you'd have to do is use another e-mail address, and maybe somehow change you IP address. I don't know how to do it, but I think it can be done.

Isn't the general idea of a forum to have lots of people participating?

All forums are privately owned. Someone owns the webspace. However, I would dare to say that it would be considered public space, since it would be a rather boring forum if only Phil posted.

Iliah and Peter have contributed so much, and would do so much more if unbanned. If you want more good content, you'd want them unbanned also. No one understands color better than Iliah.

I am also in agreement with Thiery...at one point in time there were some very good photo educators on this forum i.e. Illiad and Peter, Dave Chin, Stinson and many others, but now this place has turned into a whining 'help me pick out my freak'n camera bag' contest.

Steve

(like Steven_EJ irvin mrtasseron), then you've joined after Iliah & Peter were banned. You do not know know how much experience they brought to the forum.

Please before commenting click on * one * of the links that I've listed at the bottom of the first post, * any * one. Read it. Is it interesting ? Then feel free to comment, but I suspect that you won't call this thread a "waste of digital bandwidth" anymore !

Caveat emptor: you may end up reading all of them. They are very instructive ...

Both Iliah and Peter are welcome assets to any forum. They were certainly more helpful than a lot of people here and most users would benefit from their participation.

This forum's (and others) knowledge will improve exponentially if they are unbanned!

Thank you Phil, if you do end up unbanning them.
