I recently decided to stick with film and purchase a Nikon Coolscan IV ED film scanner, as opposed to buying a Canon D30 DSLR. I want to be able to digitize, crop, enlarge, etc. in order to print out photos. I have Photoshop 5.5 and Fireworks, and I'm trying to find the best method of tweaking the scanned TIF files so that I can reduce noise (I have to use 800 and 1600 film a lot). Any suggestions as to methods of scanning with regard to resolution, color setup, Digital ICE, etc., then being able to use filtering or other tools like unsharp mask to improve grainiy potos or match color to a print?

Try http://www.fredmiranda.com/Action_profilesPage/index.html for starters, for noise reduction and sharpening filters.

Phil,

I use 800 film a lot, and the Digital GEM in the Coolscan IV works wonders on grain. This scanner doesn't produce much noise for me. The NikonScan software has a lot of great features for tweaking prior to the final scan. The manual on the CD absolutely blows away the booklet manual. I printed mine out.
Good luck!
John

The best process for reducing noise in film scans is a process called "digital stacking." Basically, you make multiple scans of the same picture and then then digitally align and average these images. You can find more about stacking here:
