I have a Rebel XT and am going to an all inclusive vacation resort in Puerto Vallarta soon and am debating what lenses to take. I have the 17-40l, 28-135 IS, 70-200L, and a 100 and 50 prime. I would only like to take two for pictures around the resort and the kids around the pools. To cut down on items to lug around, I am thinking about a 1.4X or possibly a 2X tele-converter. Are there good brands out there besides Canon, and will one brand work on my "L" lenses as well as the regular USM ones?

Take the 17-40L and 70-200. Buy yourself either a Canon 1.4x TC or a Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x TC.

What are the thoughts on Tamron?? I'm about to buy a 2x converter
from a local store.
The Tamron SP Pro and Kenko Pro are the same converter. The Tamron-F is significantly worse but it tends to be so only on lenses faster than f2.8. One thing you should know is the Tamron-F 2x is only about 1.85x.

word of warning, the canon teleconverters only work with the longer telephotos for example my canon 1.4x does not fit my sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX. I think it should fit your 70-200L, but check, it is unlikely to fit any of your other lenses.

I also have and use a cheap 4 element Kenko 1.5x DG as this enables auto focusing with my 400f5.6L, the quality is ok and will fit all lenses. I also have a sigma 2x EX this also only fits the longer telephotos as like the canon 1.4x elements protrude into the body of the lens.

I suggest, if you can, go to a photoshop and try before you buy.

Your only lens that accepts a Canon converter is the 70-200L. On all other lenses Canon converters do not fit fysically. You might be able to fit a Sigma, Tamron or whatever but I would not advise the use of a converter. Converters are designed for telelenses, not to wide angel or normal lenses.

tell that to Daniella. LOL! The Tamron F 1.4, is a great TC. I use it all the time. I also use the Tamron F 2x TC quite a lot, especially when I shoot the Moon with my Bigma Lens.

I did say it tends to be worse only on fast lenses. You and Daniella are using them on slow lenses.
