Are You A Photographer or are You A........

--we are talking about the essence of what is a Photographer...and
anyone who has a camera and takes pictures is NOT a Photographer no
matter how hard you try to call them that. Just because i carry
hammer and a saw does not mean I am a builder.
If you construct something, you are a builder. Elitism hijacking language, once again.
A dabbler in
building yes, but not a builder. Many other examples.
All wrong, and more properly done with adjectives.

There may be different degrees and capabilities of a photographer, but all the word photographer means is that you have a camera in your hand taken a pic.

And yes if I had a hammer and a saw,and i was building something with it I would be a builder(many other examples)

The word builder means that you are putting something together, nothing in the definition says what it has to look like then it's done
Thanks

... I let others put stickers on me based on my results, especially since I can be a snapshooter at family reunions and I can also get paid for the pictures I'm taking.
So I'm a little of everything.

For you Gene, DigitlWolf needs to add a new category. It would be BEST IN CLASS! At least IMHO when it comes to bird photography, your the man.

--There is a Great Thread here recently about "What is A
Photographer?" If you have not read it yet please do. For those
that have read it, I pose this question:

If we believe the following definitions:

A PRO PHOTOGRAPHER is someone who gets paid and makes a living at it

A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER is if you try to think how to capture a
Photography by using Composition, Quality Exposure, Strong
emotional Impact, Quality of Light and you are trying to make a
Unique Photograph. In other words you are trying to capture a
"Photo" and you are applying techniques and succeding.

A PHOTOGRAPHER TO BE is someone who is interested in becomming
better but is just starting out and shooting and loves photography
and is trying to learn to become better.

A "SNAPSHOOTER" is someone who just captures "Pictures" by
capturing family events or things that catch your fancy.

In the header of your post, jsut for fun, remember this is just
for fun...let us know where you see yourself at this time??

Until I read this thread, and also when I recently attempted to photograph a "Sweet 16" party at a hotel ~ NEVER again!

Now, I have even more respect for "occasion" photographers than I did before! I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I had no idea of the chaos involved. NEVER again ... never.

For the Impressionist style of work on my website, I have a totally custom action that took me several months to develop. It starts with plugin called Mr. Contrast, and then one called Buzz Simplifier, then after that is my secret recipe. :^) I am afraid that the steps and settings must remain a secret, but the first two plugins I mentioned are a good place to start. That is where most of the effect comes from.

Hope this helps.

We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge or gallantry would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.

Hi John,

I completely disagree with your "elitism hijacking language" statement. In fact, DigitalWolf's position exhibits quite a respect for the language by cknowledging that words have connotations as well as denotations. There is nothing "elistist" about that.

Yes, anyone who takes a picture with a camera is a photogarpher, according to the denotation of the word. Similarly, anyone who plays on a piano is a pianist, according to denotation. But we generally reserve the word pianist for someone who does it a little more artfully, and with a little more skill than the typical/average piano player. There is nothing inherently wrong with believing that the same should be done for the word "photographer". I'm not saying I agree or disagree with DigitalWolf's position. It is, however, a perfectly reasonable one and is not elitist.
