Hi there

I have uploaded 20 recent photos taken with the 85. They won't win any awards but i think they do show the power of the S85.

No flowrs just a selection of shots of the family and recent days out.

I would apprciate any critique / feedback

Most images have been palyed with in Paint Shop Pro

Robert,

I really enjoyed your photos...some very nice shots. Good looking family and that dog...he's/she's gonna be big. Looks like you were near my hometown...Stafford Lake ...same one near Novato, CA?
You drove right by my house if it's the same !!!
Thanks for sharing.

Robert:

Your wife and child are gorgeous.

Also, very nice shots of Stafford Lake. Never been there myself, but it looks like a nice place to visit.

Your local park shot has excellent composition...I like the way the fence provides a strong linear pull into the middle of the shot.

The shot of Jessica is lovely...candid, and she looks like she's in thought. Very nice.

The B&W of Luc at the fountain is also quite nice.

Are these all your kids? I count 4 so far...my lord, you must have your hands full.

What post-processing do you do in PSP? I have the latest PSP 7.04...then anniversary edition. What exactly do you do? Could you share?

Thanks for posting!

Kind regards.

Hi Robert,

You've got some nice shots there. My favorites:
  • The portrait of Claire.
  • The landscape shots
  • The B&W shots
Some suggestions: Compression artifacts were very noticeable on almost all of your shots. For photo sharing on the web, I think you get more bang for the KB by posting smaller photos at lower compression. Nobody can see an entire 2272x1704 image on their screen anyway.

For the B&W shots, you might consider playing around a little more aggressively with the brightness and contrast after you've loaded the shot onto your PC. I've found that unless I do this, my shots tend to have a very gray, drab look to them, while boosting the contrast bring some of the shapes to life.

Thanks for the nice words
yeah it's Novato CA

If you drive down Vineyard to the very end there are some wonderful bike / walk trips.

Bailey was 13 lbs at 8 weeks and 40 lbs at 15 weeks. he's going to be big, but very friendly.

No thank God. Max and Luc are ours - hers are friends.
they were thrilled with the shots from the 85. Both then wanted digital cameras.

I too use 7.04 anniversary

What do I do? Hmmmm

Always gamma correct down
Always contrast up 3-6%
Always lower saturation by 1
often lower red by 3-6%
often sharpen

All the best

Hey great photos robert. It's good to see what the s85 is capable of. I just got to handle the 707 at best buy today and if i can get a good price match then I will probably upgrade(I own s85 also). One thing I did want to mention was that the 707 did not have a Black and White option under Picture effects menu. I really liked the shot of the boy by the fountain in black and white. Also in a earlier posting I reponded to you , but I will also include that here:

When playing around with the 707 today I found that it has the exact same menu system as our s85's so I was very familiar with it. What I was wondering is if the 707 alledgedly has a hidden setting to adjust sensitivity of saturation then maybe so does our s85's. Don't get me wrong I don't see the big problem in the first place, but I would like to know about it if it is available. I know I had a Casio QV-2000 and it had a full manual mode that wasn't even advertised so I know that sometimes there are hidden options. Let me know what you think.

Robert,

Those are excellent pics...I love how you lead us into the photo. Tell Richard he does look cool! You have a great eye and a beautiful family. Bailey is also a cutie.

Thanks for sharing,

hey robert, i really liked a few of the pics in particular - the lonely tree (i love trees that just beg to be caught on film... would like to see some more of that one). Also liked the boy by the water fountain... classic. wish the fence by the lake was taken on the other side of fence for catching last rays of light but the idea was on target. enjoyed them.

Thanks - i'm a little embarrassed by all these nice comments.

I really do believe the secret is not the last minute detail of the cameras spec.

The secret is taking lots of pictures, practising and carrying your camera around with you.
That's the joy of digital photograpohy. Practise is free.

robert, get off the fence and take some pics of it already! some of us have to live vicariously through you for a few more days!
That fence!!!!
The picture was taken at about 7pm. The sun was low and i was
really struggling with lighting. I thought it made it more dramatic
from that perspective. It's a mile from our house. i'll have a go!

Keep taking shots. Try some themes based on how your subjects feel, anger, joy, worried, curious. Not just with family, but also with strangers.

You have a talent you can build on.

Again, thanks for the nice comments

I've had the 85 for about 3 months and have been through a whole series of emotions with the camera. i've struggled with the focusing and the saturation issues. At the end of the day it's very easy to throw it in my bag, go off on my bike and take pictures.

Surely, that is what it's really all about.

One of the great challenges I have is that I'm a father a husband and CEO of a small company. it really doesn't give me a great deal of time to go off and take piccies.

By the way. I'm convinced that the 5x zoom of the 707 would be a major asste for taking pictures of strangers.

Give me a month or two and I'll post some more.

Again, thanks for the encouragement.
