I am about to get a 5d(hopefuly) for my xmas but have been reading threads on BF & Flash issues. Can anyone tell me are these frequent issues or are they problems with a few only which are being highlighted and consequently disproportionate to the volume of cameras sold

BF problems on 5D are VERY rare. Only a very few people here have reported it with the 5D.

The flash issue depends on who you ask. Some say KM exteraml flash have an exposure problem, and some say they work perfect. Most say the Metz external flash is better than the KM external flash units. 54Z4 model I think.

The problems are few and what you see is a vocal minority who post repetitive posts whining about their problems. A forum like this brings out the folks who either don't know how or don't want to fix the problems. KM has been very good about addressing the issues if you do run into a problem. Realize that very few have these issues it's just that they are also the ones who create the most posts by redundant complaining to the point of obsession. Look around and you'll see the "xxxxxguy" who really keeps at it and drives most people here crazy cause he won't shut up.

So true! Maybe he needs to read forum "rules/help" about bashing.
I ignore him.

LOL!! I know. When i just got my 7D I was expecting the worst with flash and focus issues after reading all those kinds of posts. I took about 30 shots with the 3600D and every one was perfectly exposed - no discrepencies from one to the next. It's even a refurb model and it's pretty much perfect.

Just a word on BF/FF issues, now from personal experience. Some people have BAD BF/FF issues, and i have no doubt that some models are out there with problems. Shame on KM QC. However, i feel like a lot of these BF issues are imagined. using a very large aperture can make it seem like there are focus issues when there really aren't, ESPECIALLY when testing on certain focus charts out there. Take those tests with a grain of salt - i get the feeling in real life shooting these issues don't even come up.

I've got my 5D two weeks ago. Body was made in Malaysia, lens - in China.
I printed focus test chart, put the camera on tripod and made test.
The focus was accurate. That's it.

Today one of my photos where published on the city site.
This is my first publication in the web and it is thanks to KM 5D.

JPEG is worse than TIFF, but you may want to check:

KIT lens was used.

Best regards.

I have a 5 & a 7

My 7 had BF & flash exposure problem both were fixed by KM in under a week. Fantastic turn around. GREAT JOB KM!

My 5D is fine as far as I can tell. I don't really use it that often. I have owned at least 2 dozen Digicams including SLRs from 3 other companies. They ALL have problems. As crappy as it is to have to send in your camera for repair a week or so is better than when I sent My S2 Pro that took 2 MONTHS! and my 10D that went in twice for 2-weeks each and was never fixed. I am pleased overall so far. After being a member @ DPreview for years now on different forums I can tell you that there is one or 2 chronic complainers on all the forums that make it sound as if your life will end if you purchase camera X.
At the risk of repeating myself their really is no perfect Digicam.

Interesting you ask about the BF and exposure issues. Those can probably both be fixed to a degree simply by sending your camera off. But the preflash duration which causes closed eyes cannot be resolved so easily.

It's hard to say how common the problems are. Some will not post in fear of being attacked by the KM faithful here. It's not easy for people to admit there is a problem with their camera model. Also, there was a list of about 10 different things that can make a picture look "soft", so many people may pass their problem off as one of those other things when in fact, it's due to a consistant back focus. In a nutshell, we will never really know how common the problem of backfocus is. People really need to verify it with the test chart and then using more distant targets like cereal boxes offset by 1 inch in distance from the lens.

See this thread for an in depth discussion that answers your concerns:

I agree with others here. There is no need to bash KM or their camera. I know I won't, in any serious way, and keep my feedback as objective as possible with details of exactly what I have seen and experienced in my testing and comparison to other models. Good luck with ever decision you make. Hopefully you won't have to send your camera back, and hopefully you can afford to buy a Metz 54MZ4 flash.

Actually, the issue raises its head more with the large aperture because of the smaller dept of field. This is what you should use when testing BF. Use the test chart that I have linked to in other threads, it is created to prevent error. Also do the cereal box test that KM recommended offsetting by 1 inch and using center focus segment centered on the cereal box. It doesn't take a brain sugeon to eliminate error and do a controlled BF test. But be sure to test with multiple lenses using the largest aperture. I think the BF problems are more common than people realize, but they are satisfied with pictures that look "generally good" after they turn up the sharpening.
