Hi there,

if you are interested in seeing some nice photos from Bryce Canyon, a National Park in Utah, please continue reading, if not than please read any of the other threads about the D200 or D2x.

I was at Bryce for 2 days a month back, it is a very 'instant visual gratification' kind of place, you won't know where to point your lens once you get near the viewpoints or on the trails, I had a good time using my 70-200 on the long end, finding interesting features within the amphitheatre.

Here are the shots, all with D2h, lens noted with each pic:

This is a broad view, taken from Bryce point if I recall correctly. Lens: 18-70DX @ 18mm

Sunlit rocks near the horizon, 200mm on the 70-200VR:

Detail in the amphitheatre: 70-200VR

In the amphitheatre: 70-200VR

In the amphitheatre: 70-200VR

My friend Rogier, on the path (very small), 200mm

Another detail of the amphitheatre, 70-200VR

A deer on the side of the road... 200mm on the 70-200VR

The last view of Bryce we had, sunset from one of the viewpoints, 18mm on the 18-70DX.

Hope you liked these, lots more where this came from. I hope to have a good bunch of Zion or Death Valley pics for you soon. Any comments or questions are very much appreciated and welcome.

Cheers,

I especially like the shot of your friend Roger and the sunset photo. These are different perspectives than I've seen in other photos. This is such a gorgeous place that I think I'm going to have to plan a trip for next year. When would be the best time to go and where would you recommend staying?

Thanks for posting!

Sander:

Great shots! I particularly like the landscape details you picked out from the rim with the 70-200 lens.

I was there last summer -- just amazing terrain! Here's a hoodoo called "Queen Victoria". You can see here in white at the top.

Beautiful. I wish I had made it to Bryce on my trip to Utah this year. Unfortunately while I was there 110°F was the low temp, so I only did Moab and Monument and called it a day. Again, great shots.

Hi Sysconsultant,

thanks for commenting on which you liked, this helps me make a better selection for my galleries and for when I show them to friends.

I was lodged a long way from Bryce, bad move. Besides getting up early for an 80 mile drive, this was also a mistake because of long drives in the dark, we actually had an accident (hitting a deer) on the way back after this day.

If I could do it all over again, I would go to the Best Western Ruby's Inn just outside the park, it's just a mile or so from the entrance and it has an excellent restuarant (where I had lunch) and a shop and such. This would save you a lot of time traveling, I know I'm booking there for the next time.

Hi John,

I missed that feature, otherwise I would have pointed it out to my friend who loves these little crazy things. That actually looks like a queen with a throne, very peculiar! Thanks for commenting on my pics.

Hello Guy,

110 is bad, I was there last month and the temperature was very nice, just below freezing in the morning, but an agreeable 70 degrees when we decended into the Canyon. Did you get any good shots in Monument Valley, I did not see any in you pbase. When I was in Monument Valley we had quite a few setbacks and after a few mediocre shots I just gave up, hands in my hair (apart from some sunset shots which turned out fine).

Cheers,

Thanks Leon,

thanks for commenting, I was not sure about the last one at first (because of the incoherent cloudcover) but it seems everybody likes it. Thanks for your input.

Hi Mike,

thanks for your comment, I've been through about a hundred of these detailed shots and not are all winners but it is fun to review them anyway, every piece of Bryce is different and at 100% it's fun to see thing I did not even see when taking the photo (like holes in the hoodoos and stuff).

Hi RFC,

thanks very much :)

When you do get there be sure to have a couple of days, Bryce is not that big but you can spend a lot of time walking the trails and trying to find angles for all the formations. I had only 2 days, I walked the Navajo loop and the Queens Garden which are very easy walks, I combined that with a trip to each and every viewpoint in the park and I wish I had more time, next time for sure.

No, unfortunately I barely shot in Monument. I had my dogs with me and the ground was so hot they couldn't even get out of the truck wothout burning their paws. Most of it I just enjoyed looking out the window. I didn't take near as many pictures on the trip as I would have liked to. Eevn Colorado was in the high 90s for the whole week. Next time I will definitely go early spring. Thanks for sharing your shots though- it's good motivation :)
