Well, I personally am really enjoying my new 707. As many of you know, in some past picks I intentionally tried to create CA, blow out reds, etc. to test the camera. Well, now, overall I am very happy with it, so it is time to switch into learning and enjoying the camera.

These shots were not taken for any other purpose except to share with our extended family around the country. So, you may see a lot of one type (composition), but when we are talking grandparents, they don't like me to throw too many out before they get to see them. :-)

Anyway, here are the official stats on these pics:

ALL ORIGINAL SIZED

Sharpness = -2
Flash Intensity = low
Auto White Balance
Resolution = highest
Quality = fine

Conditions = cloudy, sunny, cloudy ;-); one in a barn with flash (wife down on one knee with both kids)

I hope you enjoy them.

Jeff, nice job. It looks like you're starting to get the hang of the 707, or maybe it's just because you're not trying to make it screw up ;-)

Colors look great, and noise levels are very low. From your observations, does in camera sharpening appear to have any effect on noise? I know it shouldn't, but by comparing different pics it appears some of the worst offenders are using in camera sharpening.

One suggestion if I may. In the pumpkin gallery you may find it more desireable to use a higher F# and a slightly slower shutter speed. This will increase the DOF and make more of the image appear in focus. Of course you would want the opposite effect in a portrait. It looks like you still have some shutter speed to play with, even handheld.

Quite frankly, I have not concentrated much on searching for noise. Like I said, since this camera is new and my first dig cam (past SLR user), right now my extended family just wants me to post the pics so they can see my girls. :-) So, I haven't really been doing any "studying of the image". However, I have noticed a decrease in any halos. I don't think halos were a "problem," but I prefer to do any sharpening afterward.

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, it was a difficult day, because with the kids running around and the sun coming out, then going behind very thick clouds, I didn't have enough time to manual adjust to the extreme change in lighting conditions. I guess sometimes you just have to take what you can get. hehehe Thanks again.

Great shots Jeff! Looks like you are enjoying your new toy. Keep the picks coming, your family make wonderful subjects.

Wow, Mike, that is a pretty incredible page.

I certainly will NEVER feel comfortable strappin' my 707 to the back of a powered glider and sending it a few hundred feet above land and water!!! Yikes. ;-)

Jeff S. :-)
Hi Jeff --

My, that's a LOT of pumpkins!! (^-^)

With your obvious interest in aviation, I think you'll find this
site rather entertaining. I meant to pass it on to you the other
day but simply forgot. (No personal connection -- just something I
came across in another thread a while ago.)

Jeff,

Awesome pictures. I can't wait until we go pumpkin picking this year with my S70. I didn't get it until November of last year so this will be the first we shoot digital pumpkins.

By the way, how are you liking the -2 sharpening?

Awesome pictures.
Thanks.

"digital pumpkins." LOL ;-)
By the way, how are you liking the -2 sharpening?
I like it, although I may play with -1 a bit also. I personally prefer sharp pics, but I certainly don't want halos. I didn't really notice much halo'ing when it was set to 0, but as some have mentioned (when they zoom in to 200%) you can see it. For 95% of my pictures, 0 would be fine. However, I never know if "this is going to be the one" until after I take the picture. So, -2 allows me to minimize any halo'ing in the event I print it a large version. However, -1 may be the best compromise for my personal taste. ..... (sorry about the rambling. hehe)

I did the mistake of looking at the pictures before reading
through your post and was dissapointed by the general lack
of sharpness in the images, but now I realize you
used the sharpness -2 setting and it goes a long way
explaining what I see. Personally I feel the default 0
setting gives the best compromise between general
sharpness and edge haloing. I was wondering if you
used the camera's AF or if you manually focussed these shots
and, what score you would give the camera's AF so far given
the limited time you've had to play with the camera.

Thanks for sharing your great pix with us 8)

I have been using -1 and feel I am getting very sharp results - I do use TIFF format only so I can't tell you what the JPEG looks like(not to argue but I have a deep dislike of JPEG and almost never use it).

You have got to watch the video of the crash if you didn't already. OMG!

My dad was dying - of course, this is the man that crashed MY BROTHERS RC plane on take off, mom caught it on video.

Anyway, i can't imagine doing it either - but man the crash video... i've got to get a CD of it (used works DSL to DL it). I"m amazed at the pictures though, they are awesome.

Yes, I have -- coudn't resist downloading it (cable does that to you). I was expecting a very rough landing or something like that, certainly not what actually happened.

Very nice shots from the 505v. Apparently it fell off the wing at some stage and survived -- couldn't find any mention of altitude or speed when that happened, but it must have been significant for the slipstream to overcome the tape. I don't think I would have trusted a few square inches of packaging tape!!

Must get around to the other video...

Wonderful!!! Your 'pumpkin patch & kids' photos exemplify why I am going to really enjoy this camera. Those shots are delightful, and they show that the camera can do a great job capturing a fun moment. Glad to see some photos taken to just make a memory, and share the moment with family and friends.

I used the camera's AF. The "score" that I would give the camera is....well, it's not an SLR. :-) I need to get used to the slight delay. I find that I am capturing the "moment + 0.5 secs" typically. Basically, if the kids are moving around a lot, I have a hard time getting them framed and focused. I could attempt to overcome this by using a higher F-stop to create greater DOF, however, as was the case yesterday, when the sun keeps going back and forth behind clouds, that can be difficult. I guess in a perfect world the AF would be faster and the image would remain in on the screen.

However, just to clarify the above though, I am now in the realm of critiqueing the most minute "issues." Nothing that I saw up to now is going to be a deal breaker. I am definitely very happy I bought this camera. :-)

Dub, could you tell me why you prefer tiff format over jpg ? Just curious as it seem most people (%-wise) use jpg.

Thanks.

Jeff S.

I have always felt it looked better than JPEG - I have always been looking for a near film quality(old 35mm habits) and TIFF always looked better no matter what camera I have used. I have always planned on large storage needs - the F707 has one knock I knew before I bought it and thats no multiple shots in TIFF(on the other hand it writes the fastest of any camera I have had).

The pictures in TIFF look so good from the F707 I may break down and use the JPEG because the write speed on JPEG is incredible!

How about still or posed life, where you have plenty of time to focus? Is the rate of correct focus approaching 100%? Does it seem to be way off target sometimes, not really focusing on anything?

Definitely, near 95% + when it is given a chance to find the correct focus (i.e. stills, etc.).
Does it
seem to be way off target sometimes, not really focusing on
anything?
Nope, it does fine. It just has a hard time when the subject is a 2 year old running straight toward you. :-)

Very nice shots!

Though not a true comparison with the G2... hopefully, I'll get my camera tomorrow so I can begin my evaluation, I thought you might enjoy a similar "pumpkin trip" that I shot with the G2.

All in all, I was pleased. It's going to be a difficult challenge for the F707 to win out, but I'm hoping for some equally thrilling shots from my new digicam tomorrow.
