I was at one of my local camera shops (Cord in Indy) and was told Nikon was only planning to ship about 400 D200s in the initial batch, most of which were beling claimed by B&H, and that it may be Mid March before most stores are fully supplied to meet orders.

Has anyone else heard anything like this or how wide spread d200s would be intially?

Well, maybe this is just he "excitedly waiting for my camera" person in me, but this sounds like BS to me.

If Nikon only produces 400 in the first batch, those would be assembled by maybe 2 or 3 people. The plant where they are made is capable of producing many, many, many tens of thousands of cameras per month. If Nikon were to trickle them out that slow it would be similar to how Canon could not produce many D60 bodies. That camera actually got replaced before all the back orders where filled.. Just does not make sense.

The more I think about it, I don't think Nikon could even turn a profit on 400 units. Releasing such a small number is just asking for trouble.

Maybe I am wrong, but I bet there are D200s all over the place by mid March.

I just spoke with B&H this morning, the salesperson stated they have no idea how many units they are receiving. Nikon visited them 2 weeks ago and confirmed NOTHING with them.

They are not accepting pre-orders because of unknown shipments unlike many other stores.
This could be hogwash being from a salesman.

I WAS a Canon user but the D200 has captured me with the build quality, and many features (spot metering) of great importance.

MY best friend has been drooling over my 20D so he now has a very good set of Canon gear and I pre-ordered from Ritz Camera a new D200 wuth bucks left for ne nice lens and flash.

Good luck and the wait begins.

Actually, releasing a small number of cameras initially makes a great deal of sense in the long run. Nikon tests their cameras prior to release but knows that they can't or won't fine everything that needs tweaking. This way if anything major or minor needs to be changed, recalled, etc. Nikon will learn this from the first batch. This way they reduce the risk involved in releasing a new product to both their financial well being and reputation.

The ideal situation would be for Nikon to not make users beta testers, test the camera through and through themselves and then manufacture large lots to meet initial demand that can only exist at the beginning of a product cycle when the buzz to have the latest and greatest camera is largest. IMO

But as for me, I too would like to have my camera no later than say...now.

Don't you think that they do that with every camera?

I think that they do it.

There will be also new 20D next year and maybe even better than D200 who knows. I don't see why you run to D200 so quickly. I also think that new Canon have better noise performance like Canon 20D have over D200 from what I had seen.

Let wait for official samples. :)

The Nikon lens selection and prices were a contributing factor in my decision to go with Nikon.

The D200 based on what I have seen appears to be one nice platform to migrate to.

This is a personal choice just like anything in life, I really want to look at the new VR lenses which are being released.

I have always admired Nikon for the flash and metering systems from the D70 and up, another factor I took into consideration on making the decision.

Thanks,

First shipment is probably between those numbers, might be even over half million but that is less likely. They have had production lines running for some time now, and if they can make > 50 000 of those per month, 150 000 - 200 000 is more likely than below 50 000 units.

Salesman may say to you that you can never get one, or not before 2008... buy Canon, with Canon you can... (he wants to sell you what he has now, when 200D finally ships in 3-4 weeks from now, you might buy the camera from some place else, and so he would not get any sales. Any certain sales today even with what ever lies he has to tell you is better business for him than some possible more expensive camera next month - thats the slimy-lizzard-business-logic-of-low-"business"-people-in-no-honor-camerashops).

Hi:

There was some talk about mid December but according to my local dealer, who has been dealing with Nikon for 40 years, it is now very unlikely that many will be shipped in December. The Nikon rep was in the store last week and the rep didn't have a D200 to show, which he says, means that it's highly unlikely that Nikon is ready to get them to stores in any quantity in December.

Cheers,

So what happened with your earlier post today that said they were shipping 11/23-11/24.

OK Nikon seems to always play catch up to Canon, But.....

The D70 was and is a killer.

They must get the D200 out now, flood the pipeline and sell a ton of them by Christmas. If they get enough out and the press is positive the sales will continue stong well into the summer. If they don't flood the market Canon will ursurp the D200 with a lower priced 5D.

I think Nikon has its plants building them right now at full capacity. If firmware is not ready, it will be loaded into the camera just prior to shipping.

Nikon will not let us down. Thake it to the bank!

Hi,

Had to be in Japan past month to shoot Japanese autumn. While at Nikon Service Centre in Osaka, I had small presentation of D200, lenses and a new close up flash unit, usuable with D200.

In Japan, sales price will be around 198.00 JPY, street price 10% lower I guess.

They already told me that it MIGHT be available in mid December at most Japanese stores.
