I received and installed the Feisol 3401 Center
Mount Column Kit today. I thought that I
would offer my comments on the modification.

You have to remove the legs from your existing
3401 and install them on the new center piece.
That is the biggest problem as you have to remove
the mounting screws which are very tight and
you only have one hex head wrench (the one you
received with your tripod originally). If you
are not like me and have tons of these wrenches
around this can be a problem. I did not have
another metric wrench but I managed. It would
be really nice if they would include at least
one of these hex wrenches in the kit and two
would simply be wonderful. Taking apart the
legs involves a little bit of dexterity. Be
careful as there are brass washers in between the legs
and the center column mount. There are external lock
washers as well on each end of the double screw that you
take out on the leg and they are black and hard to see.
I dropped on of the damn things and it took me a half hour
to find it again.

Reassembling the legs onto the new center piece
was not too difficult but aligning the brass
washers in between the leg and the center piece
and getting the screwend in can be a little bitchy.

The center column is now carbon fiber and the locking
piece is very similar to the leg segment locking
pieces except it has flanges on it to enable a really
good and easy tightening (and loosening) capability.

They do supply a small hex wrench and a couple of spare
screws for the column top on the tripod. The piece
they send is the standard piece they now ship with
the basic tripod and you have to remove the existing bolt
mount and attach the center column mount. The standard
tripod does not have a column anymore.

The instructions are not very good and there is
nothing about removing the standard tripod top
and replacing it with the center column top.
Maybe they figure even us Americans can figure
it out and choose not to include this little
tidbit of instruction.

Other items: The leg pivots have some sort of
lubrication on them and by replacing them some
of it gets removed. It would be nice to know
what the lubrication is so that it could be
replaced - better still it would be nice if
Feisol sent a little lube with the kit.

When removing the screws I noticed that there
is a little screw tightening material (Locktite?)
on the screws. I don't know if by seperating these
and re-attaching if that degrades this material (I
expect that it would) but again, it would be nice
to know what the material is so that the user could
choose to replace it if he liked - better still would
be if Feisol sent a little dab of it along with the
kit.

Overall observation: I like it. It beats the
hell out of the previous center column mount.

They really need to send two hex wrneches with the kit.

Question:

Is it possible to use the old aluminum column, with only the short "top" part in place. I usually carry the longer "bottom" part in my bag, since I go ground level fairly often (more often than I would use the column).

Is there any play, to move it up/down. I ask this since I've made a aluminum head mount that goes a couple of mm further down on the column. I never liked the plastic one that shipped with the original tripod. I put in stop screws in mine too, so I'd not have to tighten the head as hard. :-)

If this is that much of an improvement the coulmn might actually be usable on occations. :-)

BTW: I got two hex wrenches with my tripod.

I received wrenches with my purchase of the 3401. I also purchased the ball head. I am getting use to using both of them. Overall I am happy with the purchase

That was an interesting question. I tried to insert the entire old column
in the new setup and it wouldn't fit. It was too tight and I did not want
to force it. I then seperated the column and tried to insert the short
end and it worked. It is tight but not too tight. The nice thing about
this setup is that the entire short column is contained withing the new
compression grip setup. I might just keep this in my bag.
Is there any play, to move it up/down. I ask this since I've made a

to tighten the head as hard. :-)
The entire short tube is the length of the compression grip. It will
move up and down but I would think that you would the risk an uneven
grip on the column as you raise it.

The new cap may still be plastic but it looks like a different composition
from the previous cap. It is not as grooved and it appears a dull black like
it too might be of carbon base - not sure of this. The older one was
molded plastic and this one might be as well but it feels different.
If this is that much of an improvement the coulmn might actually be

I measured the column length that is contained within the column
support and it is a little over two inches. That is at least a half inch
of additional support over the previous setup. The compression band
within the column support is almost two inches long but the actual
compression adjutment knob is about an inch and a half high off the
top of the leg support plate.
BTW: I got two hex wrenches with my tripod.
Damn, don't tell me I have already lost one of them!

If the shorter one fits, I guess it would be possible to fit the longer one too. They are the same when I measure them, so it might just be tolerances making it a little harder to fit for you, I think.

So if you put on the end "knob" with the hook you cannot really move it up down, then?
I guess I could "adjust" my head mount a little bit, if that's so.

If I did interpret what their website said correctly the new one is in metal.
The compression band within the column support is almost two inches
long
The old one is 32mm, that would be an increase of allmost an inch, if the new one is allmost an inches (50.8mm).

They might have done a mistake, giving me one extra, or you only one. ;-)

If you have the time and possibility to take some pictures, that are a little more highres than the ones on Feisol's website, that would be much appritiated. :-)

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. :-)

I'll take some this evening and post them.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. :-)
No problem. You're welcome.

Thanks for that - I never knew they had upgraded the center piece, placed an order for one straight away, never been happy with the way the ballhead sits on the center piece, plus I don't use the center column - so it removes some weight.

Thank you for posting them. (It saves me from having to do it).
Very nice pictures, BTW.

I'm ready to switch ballhead!!!
I have Manfrotto Bogen 3021 tripod and Bogen 3265 Ballhead right now.
I'm just wondering if Feisol CB-50H ballhead fits my tripod???

please confirm my suspicion.
thanks

I'm waffling over whether to buy direct.
My math:
Direct from Feisol
3401N - $175
Center Column - $39
Shipping - $37
Total - $251

threshold concepts
3401N w/ center column and shipping - $249.95

Of course, direct from Feisol, you can buy without center column and save that way.
