I am looking for a compact to supliment my rangefinder kit. 2 cameras that caught my interest were the V3 and the new Canon s80.

Obviously, the V3 is more adaptable with a lens thread and a hot shoe, but the Canon is much smaller.

Image quality wise, the Canon has no Raw, but I believe uses the same Sony senser as the V3 with an addition of a megapixel. The S80 has Canon's new processor, but also I know the V3 has gotten high marks for speed.

Looking at their individual specs, they are extremely similar in ISO, f stops, and shooting modes.

I was hoping for some insight from the forum on anything that may sway my decision. Thanks for your time.

I cannot speak regarding the Canon, except what I would read in reviews. I have had the V3 for about a month and a half now. It is an amazing camera:
incredibly fast focus at wide angle; reasonably fast at telephoto
lots of manual control
external flash capability
decent zoom
sharp and focused pics
great camera for my DW (auto mode) or me (manual controls when needed)

The V3 is my second digicam; my Oly is a great little camera too, with good focus speeds when compared to most other digicams, but slow compared to my DW's 15 year old Minolta zoom. This V3 really does have incredibly fast focus and low shutter lag. For me, that is one of my priorities, as using a slow performing camera for everyday use can be frustrating. If I was using it for other things, such as landscapes, etc, then quick performance would not be an issue.

Good luck with your decision.

Olympus C-60, a great little camera
Just bought a Sony V3

I've had the Sony V1 for a couple of years, great camera. I recently upgraded to the V3. Why? Better features, plus I wore out my V1 from taking it on roller coasters and water rides. See my pages here, most of them are taken with the Sony V1. Newer pictures are taken with a Canon 20D and 24-70L.

The V3 has many upgrades that are worth it.

1. The Mpeg movie mode shoots at 30 FPS in 640x480 VGA. The V1 was 15 fps, which is good, but 30 FPS is even better.
2. 7mp, pictures turn out really nice.
3. LCD screen is big.
4. Controls are easy.

5. Hot shoe works with the V1 or the V3. I have the big flash (HVL-F32X), and it works great. When you point it up at the ceiling, it lights up the entire room.
6. I've shot concerts, roller coaster videos, plus the family stuff.

7. Love the easy interface to the computer. Just plug it into a USB port, and it's a new drive on your computer.
8. I use a wide angle lens for coaster videos, and this camera can accept one.

The V3 is the one I'll use on vacations and roller coaster videos. The 20D is too big for that. So yeah, I have the 20D for our horse jumping pictures, and the V3 for simple stuff.

the V3 and showing some of my results.

There's so few fast compacts to choose from but the V3 is in with the best of them and will give you big and beautiful prints - straight out of the camera if you want.

Pixels proliferate but film is more precious.

Is there anyway to see those pics from Venice[?] not cropped and not "shrunk" down for Web use?

I can only speak for the V3 --- hey, you're on a sony forum!!! As far as the specs & features go, you can check these side by side somewhere on this site.

Two things that haven't been mentioned which may be enough to make a difference are focus speed and battery life. Also, I did notice that the aperture at tele appears to be better for the V3.

That being said, the S80 and V3 don't seem to be direct competitors, primarily due to the size. I would think that your comparison would be the G6 vs V3 or the P200 vs the S80.

I see that others are posting their V3 galleries. Here's mine:

Good luck,
