I have carefully followed other folks' problems with the USB connection. Finally, there is a problem with my connection. My question is...does the camera connection have the ability to disconnect other USB connections? I had thought for the longest time that I had (gasp) dirty connectors. Usually, after plugging and unplugging several times, the problem would go away. After wriggling the camera USB (today) and watching it make and break connection, I'm wondering if the camera USB can also kill the mouse connection. My Imac has two USB ports...one of which is used for the keyboard...the other for the Panasonic FZ20. Anyone have any insights into this...

You knew it was going to happen and still did not get a card reader?

Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! Please stop with that wet noodle. So, I have finally set off the card reader alarm, eh. What brand do youse recommend, Genece?

After posting the question, a perfectly logical answer finally came to me. If the mouse problem only occurs with camera connected, Sherlock, here, would be led to believe that the camera USB can, indeed kill little mousie. Anyway, what brand would you advise, sir?

USB deviced can also draw current off of the USB device. If I plug my FZ30 into my mac keyboard (with mouse attached) it will overdraw the circuit. I had to plug it into a separate USB port. This is now moot, as I bought a card reader (LaCie) and I'll never go back. The card reader uploads MUCH faster than the camera, and I don't have to use up battery power on my FZ30

If you have a front slot I would get one like this I use it for travel

And I have pointed several to this one and no one has complained yet.

I have a lexar and bought my daughters a couple off Ebay.. they all seem to work.

I note that Malwart lists a Lexar USB reader for $9.98. Is that one satisfactory?

Don't know if it is of any comfort, but I tried to follow up on the advice to use a card reader... I even have one built in in my desktop. However, at every attempt I get a series of files that wouldn't open and a loss of up 50% of the stored pictures that I can't even recover using the cam+usb. Probably caused by a faulty driver(?), but untill I sort this out, I'm bound to use the supplied cable. (not to eager to go out and buy another card reader with the experience of this one).

As I'm writing this, I could test the card in my PDA and see if this can be used in the card reader and fz20. The card could have a problem?

Well, until Gene whooped up on me with the noodle, I had been content to go on with somethin' that ain't broke. My new card reader will probably introduce new problems.
Hope not. Thanks for the post.

Deffently get a reader!

Question: What modes is the USB port on the camera set for? USB. has many slave but ONLY one master. Else problems can occure. Thats why there is a "switch" mode at least on the LX1 andd I asume on your unit. Make sure its not set to print but to PC.

Good Luck!

Ain't no switch on my FZ20, Nightwinger...and I used to read that manual 'til I was blue in the face.

Don't forget that the camera could well be drawing a high current from the usb port. Although there is bus power, that doesn't mean that it can sustain the high current draw from the camera.

It is therefore better to connect high current devices to a powered usb hub. These can normally supply 500 mAh per port i.e. a 4 port hub would come with a 2 Ah power supply.

Thanks to a prompt by 2cats, I went to the camera's internals and indeed, the camera is set on pee cee. The secret is in that funky little connector supplied by the manufacturer.

Had the same problem with my Mac and my new LZ2; so i bought a 4 port USB hub from Nexxtech and a centrios card reader. All is well now.

I would think that walmart reader would work fine on XP...Install no drivers,
I think that is where people run into trouble.
XP needs no drivers for things such as cameras and readers.

I have seen about 12 different readers all of the less expensive variety work flawlessly on various XP computers.

OH My.. I read that house leveling thing and then looked at your profile....you have my sympathy ...I just can not imagine living thru that.
I hope things soon improve for you and all the people of that region.

Could be the card or just an incompatability with a particular reader. Had that happen to me. Every card reader but the one I bought worked with the card. Had a few at work also that the card readers did not like. Some did happen to be faulty cards. Funny part they worked in the camera, no where else.

Cheap or free (with rebate) readers were the most problem, also the slowest.

Good luck

First thing...of course, Malwart didn't have the ten dollar variety. They had the 20 dollar variety, though. Surprise! I have only tried it on a few pics. Doesn't seem any faster than the camera method. Plus, you have to open the camera, etc., etc., etc.

Yep. Foundation work and roofing be big bidness in this part of the country. The guy who's doing the work also has 21 roofing crews working in South Missipi. They had to knock two big holes in the carport (next to the house), so everything is dust city.

However, since I disconnected the camera USB cable from the Imac, the mouse has been very frisky. Hasn't died a single time.

P.S. Re: foundations in Missipi

Yudora Welty put it best. Round heah, Yazoo Clay be well known because it be constantly movin' about. Some of the roads are like rollercoasters. Yudora (whose Belhaven area house sustained major damage) called Yazoo Clay "...slow motion earthquake."

Mouse has croaked one more time. Brought it back to life by unplugging and plugging the mouse cord into the Imac...which convinces me that the problem is simply dirt or corrosion on the contacts. Found a cleaning tip in "groups." One fellow cleaned USB plugs with a wooden match (split in half with an Exacto knife). I found a box of wooden "advertising" matches to be about the right thickness and gave it a try. We'll see if that works.

Maybe someone that knows about them will join in.

XP would have seen the reader just as it sees a camera....my guess is MAC will do that also...but they are foreign to me.

Every once in a while when at my daughters I use her husbands MAC and all I can say is I do not know why anyone would want one....I know most of you guys feel the same about windows.
