I just got a 2nd hand canon 28mm f2.8
the focussing seems nice and sharp even wide open
but the motor is like having a wasp on speed inside you lens
is this normal?
I thought I remember reading that the MF motor was a bit screechy

maybe I exagerated a bit -- but is it the SAME sound as the 50mm 1.8?
I find the 50mm has a deeper, clunkier sounds
whereas the 28mm is more of a buzz
or is something wrong?
it focusses fine!

I have the 28mm 2.8 it makes a noise like you described its an old design. i like using the focus scale on it which is cool.

thanks for that --- I guessed it was the older motor making the strange noise, just checking

the distance scale is great --- I wish all lenses had them

I also like the focussing ring and how it is "deactivated" during AF and has about 180 degrees to turn during MF

much better than the 50mm 1.8 focussing ring, which has less than 90degrees turn to it
