Hi there,

I just want to hear some advice on buying this lens.

I'm going to buy this sigma lens as used one at $550.00( 1 year and half old copy) Is this price good for this lens compated to the new Canon 70-200 f/4 L which costs me also almost same price

Thanks for your advice in advance.

S.Kim

I have the Sigma and found it to be a very good lens. Also, use the Sigma 2x extender with the lens and does a great job at 400mm f5.6. The price seems to be in line with the lens.

Good luck and good shooting.

First, the price seems a little high for a used 70-200 EX 2.8. I was thinking between 450-500 from a private party, especially since there is a newer version out (the DG version).

Second, this is probably one of the more popular canon vs. sigma posts, do a quick search and you'll see lots of samples from both and some direct comparisons.

I shoot the Sigma, i thought it was a better value than the Canon 70-200 L 2.8. In your case, the better comparision is 2.8 vs. 4.0. The 2.8 is indispensible for bokah and lower light, the trade off is weight.

I have to agree with Frank on that. I will have to say that the used prices on that particuliar Sigma and the Canon does tend to remain pretty high. The newer DG version of the Sigma is $738 at Sigma$less. The older non DG vesion sold for $659. I haven't seen any version of the Sigma selling used for much under $575 or so. The Canon sells used for between $500-550. on POTN, FM, and ebay. So though we think it is too high, the numbers show that there are many that don't think that way. This very reason, has often pushed me into just buying new instead.

Now! to that Sigma, though the DG model is supposed to reduce glare; there aren't that many people that had reported problems with the non DG model having glare.
Both are optically excellent lenses.

Have to determine if you need the f/2.8, or if weight is an issue for the Sigma. Shooting much lowlight, then I would lean towards the Sigma.

Other than pricing (which is probably fair, considering the used lens market) either will be a great choice.
