PD70X available in USA

Hi Rob,

Perhaps reading what I wrote a little bit more carefully might help.

I did not ask for PD70X to format the card, I asked it to delete the file.

"FORMAT A:" does (or can) cause the change in file system type, cluster size etc.

"DEL A: . s" and "RMDIR" does not.

As for allged 3 seconds, well, try to put on the gloves (or expose you hands to cold till fingers stop to bend) and format the card in camera, possibly navigating from Custom Functions page to Tools and then back. If you manage it in 3 seconds, you must be a Batman and Zorro in one package, but I am unfortunately not.

I won't even mention Parkinson law of digital photography that the climax in the action comes exactly when a photographer changes and formats the card and that those 10 seconds may be a lot.

I listed my other reasons above. If they do not apply for you, fine. I did not suggest it as a default feature. In a private mail I subsequently sent to HyperDrive I suggested it to be controlled by a setting, such as perhaps recorded in PSD.OPTIONS or whatever configuration file placed in drive's root directory and checked by the unit at power-up time.

Good answer!

Since day one of operations, the payment page IS PROTECTED by 1024-bit SSL to protect your credit card information.

However we understand users' concerns to protect their identities as well.

As a result, with immediate effect, all login and checkout pages are now SSL protected.

Dear Mark,

I understand yours and other users frustrations. Trust me, there
are much better ways to fraud consumers other than taking in used
hard disk casings or selling empty HyperDrive HD80 without hard
disk
I thought the description on the website of a "bare" PSD was pretty clear to me. I'm not sure why others got confused on that matter.
Anyway if word gets out that we are ripping people off, you guys at
dpreview will be the first to spread the word and warn others.
You ceratinly got that right! LOL

Thanks for supplying all the contact information. That makes me feel much more comfortable should I ever need it. Now, can you clarify my last concern...If I ever need servicing within or out of warranty of my PDX70 purchased overseas, will your US facility service it, including any warranty work that it might receive at no charge?

Chill guys.

The "auto delete" feature would have to be manually enabled by the user, something like adding a text file e.g. config.sys with a line which says

AutoDelete=True

before the feature gets enabled. This feature will be disabled by default for all future firmware updates.

For the normal user who just use the HyperDrive HD80 out of the box or just simply update to the latest firmware. The HD80 will function normally without this "auto delete"

Yes we will service all PD70X at no charge as long as it is within the warranty period and purchased before 5th November 2005. Thereafter U.S. based users are encourage to purchase the HD80 to enjoy local service and support. We will match your shipping method when we ship the unit back to you.

I received today mine HD80 ordered via HyperDrive.com. Save for a different logo it looks, feels and smells identically to PD70X. Have not tried it yet, just installed hard drive into it and launched surface scanning.

As for choosing disk drives, I prefer to use Segates 5400.2 drives since they tend to be more reliable than some other brands and have lower heat dissipation that is important for tight enclosures (I avoid 7200 RPM drives for this reason in PSDs). If you want to purchase a drive, perhaps the easiest way is to check manufacturer's web site and figure out what model suits you and then seek for the best price and good-rating store via shopping.yahoo.com.

One can easily find 80-100 GB drives for $120-140.

Ordered a Hyperdrive on Monday and it arrived today. I hope that can clean up the confusions.

Also I don't care who the parent company is or who makes it. Just that it's a working good product, and I can get service when needed. That's what matters.

So you'd rather fragment the card into oblivion.

What a silly idea.

The rest of your reply must be some kind of joke. If you bothered to think about how one uses a PSD and a camera you'd never said anything.

I think it's pretty obvious that this new user sanho is fake and has some axe to grind with the company and therefore is spreading false rumors.

and have had a chance to play with it for awhile. It is a great device and the battery life and speed are fantastic. I have been using a Mindstor (which is a first-rate product) and there are a few things I would like to see updated on the HD80. The screen really needs to stay on longer (it only stays on for about ten seconds if you don't push any of the buttons) and when it comes back on it seems to always have to check the available disk space (which requires some time). Also, there really should be some type of media control. I downloaded a firmware update from the compactdrive site (the hyperdrive site didn't seem to have it) and it worked fine in the HD80. It allows automatic downloads and verification.

Dear Rob,

Thank you for your kind comment reach in content and perception.

Apparently shooting 100-150K frames a year it never occured to me how one uses PSD (of which I have six) and cameras and that you know it better for me.

I would adjust my earlier comment: you must be not only Zorro, but also omniperceiving Budda (and mother Teresa in heart to top it off).

I am absolutely flattered by honour to communicate wtih such a distinguished person.

Best regards.

Oh, and this wonderful "fragmentation" stuff... How could it possibly be that in 3 years shooting digital I hardly ever reformatted any CF card and still all my bodies shoot and record data just fine at their maximum CF interface speed?

Could it possibly be, by chance, that once every file on the card is deleted, FAT entries for all their clusters are set to "available" and there is nothing on the card but contiguous array of "free" FAT entries from the start of the card to its end?

I am sure, you will find FAT specification a pleasurable and refreshing reading.

Maybe I can visit their office on Monday. It's just 10 mins driving from my place.

I'm also thing about getting an extra replacement card slot / battery cover.

I recently ordered a PDX70 from you, and ordered a Samsung 80GB HD for it. However the HD doesn't have the male pin connectors as shown in the directions. What type of drive do I need to purchase? Is there a specific interface I need to order, ATA-6, ATA-7? It's definitely not a SATA.

Any help would be appreciated. I know you have a link to tiger direct, but I'm trying to buy from newegg.com, as I like their service better.

oboguev,

It's refreshing to read witty retorts!

The HD80 uses ATA-6 (also known as IDE) 2.5 hard disk. This interface is currently the most common type hard disk used in notebooks and other portable storage device.

Don,

Make sure you search Newegg for "Notebook / Laptop Hard Drives" not "Internal Hard Drives". From what I see, Newegg only offers 3 drives from Samsung that are 2.5" form factor (40 and 60GB but not any that are 80GB). It sounds like you purchased a 3.5" form factor drive (Model #: SP0822N Item #: N82E16822152021).
